frankel 2,123
Does spaying a terrier affect how it works?? I have heard they can put weight on and become laid back and a bit lazy. I was just wondering if anyone has had there terriers spayed and did it make them better or worse grafters. Cheers Quote Link to post
jasperdog 98
i have had my two bitches done and both are still good hard grafters. Only rats and rabbits hope this helps you. Quote Link to post
jawn 449
It doesn't change the terriers nature. If it was a good worker before, it will be a good worker after. They can put on weight and become lazy. But that is easily controled at feeding time. I wouldn't do it under any circumstaces to a pup...but then I'm not a responsible pet owner.lol Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
I have had 2 spayed mate and it never effected them one bit...if you give them regular excercise which i no you do and gauge the food accordingly she will be fine..you have to wait till she is well out of season and the cut made is tiny around 1 to 2 stitches size wise. frankel 2,123
I have looked into it and apparently has to be done 3 months after a season. Something about blood vessels and can possibly cause bleeding. After getting it done, does it take long to get them back working?? Has anyone had any negative outcomes after getting a terrier spayed?? Be as useful as positive comments just so i know what can possibly happen. Thanks so far Quote Link to post

bulljack 480
i have to get a good bitch done due to a reacuring prolapse, which is the last thing i wanted to do but if it got any worse she would have to be pts, so its in the dogs best interest, my vet said 3 months time as shes in heat now just happy i will still have her, had a lurcher bitch done and never had problem working her afterwards you just have to keep them fit and good diet atb. 1 Quote Link to post
rossthedog 76
if it benefits the bitch health wise all well and good, but spaying effe cts hormones and surely hormones must effect working ability aggresion etc. Quote Link to post
northern lad 2,292
A pal of mine had his Bedlington bitch spayed (back in the eighties )and it resulted in her becoming incontinent, she was pts 12months or so later as she lived in,as with all things surgical procedures will have progressed since then I suppose....just to add Ive known of quite a few bitches go down with ovarian cancer, that would have been prevented by spaying.Funny enough Im contemplating getting the staff spayed, has anybody else heard of any other bitches becoming incontinent as a result of spaying? Dave i did a fair bit of research into this before i had my present terrier spayed (as has been said the weight and lazyness has to be managed but it hasnt been a big issue for me). from the reading i carried out it tends to be the larger breeds that have suffered the incontinent issues, and less so since the procedure's have become more refined and the op is now fairly widespread. talking to my vet he told me that to get the added protection from ovarian cancer, it was best to spay after the 1st season and before the bitch reaches her 3rd or 4th season. Millet 4,497
Incontinence in dog's can be treated so they is no need to have them PTS these day's..i have a friend who has had 5 bitches done over the year's with only one of them becoming incontenent and that was a lurcher..none of them ever lost they prey drive or gained weight.. 2 Quote Link to post
