Brimmer 220
As stated on yesterdays report, would be out again today, the new land needs it, mixy is on the edge of the warrens, there are a good few rabbits there, in full view of the farmers daily. Last night the old feller called to give it a miss, he'd had enough yesterday, and needed to get ready for a bird show. (he's been a big canary man all his life.). I was glad in a way, i joke about giving him hell, but really dont like to see him suffer, had to make two trips up and down the hill yesterday to get everything home! This gives me chance to work on the new apprentice. My old mate Rock the lump of a russel is really struggling now, i took him out 2 weeks ago, he did great, but cannot hear a thing now, and tbh, has suffered ever since, his heart mumur has him in coughing fits probably every couple of hours, and i am sad to say it, but he is going to have to retire now at 12 and a half years old, and cannot see a long life in the future for him, clocks ticking and i'm dreading the day. As for his replacement, a little russel bitch, now 18 months old. I badgered a lad off here for her, purely on the type and breeding of her. My old man thinks i'm bonkers taking another terrier on, they cannot catch anything, cause trouble, have no brain, and are more hassle than they are worth. I totally agree with everything he says, but then i look at the bigger picture, the determination of most terriers will make them mark, and with that marking ability would put most runners to shame, the last one has lasted 12 years of work, can be taken on any land without fear of injury, even if they were injured, they would still do the job. Its always something to fall back on, aiil they have to do is mark to earn there keep. Brick as i have named her due to her lack of brain, (Thick as a brick) has over the last few weeks shown she can mark, now i have something i can work with. As it stands, i could not let her off the rope, 10 mtrs long she will work until she can be let off freely, maybee next year, maybee the year after, maybee life on a rope, but you work with what you got. In time i will house a good few runners, but not yet. Back to today, the two jills taken out again after yesterday, were a little slower, and took some warming up, b*****d even seemed half hearted, whilst Eyeball, with a scarred face and neck from the day before, slowly plodded on and got stuck in. we moved the rabbits same as, but took a bit longer , and hardly surprising the day the jills had done the day before, wasnt expecting too much, but needs must. Ended up on 27 2 days on the bounce grafting would take it out of any animal. Edited October 28, 2012 by Brimmer 2 Quote Link to post
fitchet 788
Nice one mate shame about the old terrier. I agree with your old man though i grew up hunting with terriers and will allways have a soft spot for the little juks but i also love the calmness of a good lurcher on the bury. Horses for courses though best of luck with the youngen. Quote Link to post

Shame about the old terrier aswell mate, but he's had a cracking life by the sound's of it Hi Steve, the runners are the old mans dogs, and are always taken out first, the terriers always take a back seat. I always try to get them out when the old feller is not out, and this one needs a lot of work yet! Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Well done Brim, another good outing, know what you mean about retired dogs, my GSD is coming up for 12 in March, his back end is stiffning up, been retired for a year now to make him out live his mind, he's still lively mentally, but physically he's getting old fast.
