Bosun11 537
I grew up in Anfield, Liverpool 4, which is just about as inner city as you could get. Living there as a kid, I had one mate with the same interests and weekends were spent 'bussing' it beyond the city to get our fill of hunting, got some funny looks off the bus drivers and passengers with our lurchers, terriers, ferrets and shovells, especially on the way home caked in shite but most folk then simply smiled and seemed happy about what we were up to and loved the dogs. We had our city spec's, EdgeHill railway, Anfield Cemetry, Liverpool slaughterhouse to name a few but getting out to the citys edges and real farms was by far the best. Met some good dog lads from around the citys edges back then too. What I do find funny now, is the ammount of city kids that are into the dogs there these days, only the city edges had numbers of young hunters back then. No different as I grew older, car as soon as I could, permission sought and then my own house (still in Anfield) as soon as I could so as I could keep my dogs and hunt. Lived that way for the next 23 years, no detriment to the capabilitys of my animals because I was keen enough to get 'em out at every opportunity. Stayed the same until a couple of years back and I moved to one of those specs I hunted as a kid.... Live the dream..!! Quote Link to post

j1985 1,984
I'm lucky, I live 10 mins outside north London in a university town and have land to hunt pretty much on my doorstep thats coated with gear. Not much permission mind but as there's hardly anyone round my way with lurchers it's pretty much mine for the taking and as long as I'm respectful ie closing gates, not lamping houses and being tidy I shouldn't have any problems. Hopefully lol that was until i moved here lol Haha but you don't know my secret locations!! Quote Link to post
staffyspen 43
Thanks all. I do agree that having the will and desire to get out is the important thing and just getting out there! Trying to find some good productive land that I can mooch across is my hardest challenge at the moment, but have now had some great offers off the back off this post, thanks lads!! Thanks Quote Link to post
Ideation 8,217
Unfortunatly you just have to get used to it, as it isnt going to get any bigger. Every year, the number of 'hunters' grows like mad, and the amount of huntable land and quarry shrinks. In order to test your animals you need a lot of land, and its just not possible for all of the folk out there to have 'enough' land to do so, it just isnt there. What we need is about 75 percent of folk to stop hunting . . . . . then we would be ok. 2 Quote Link to post

beast 1,884
i grew up in east london and i used to hunt fox rat squirrel and the very occasional rabbit in the big old cemeteries, railway banks, allotments and some of the bigger parks. used to get the train out to richmond park but mad esure the dogs were steady round the deer - there was a captive herd in greenwich park then which i used to break the dogs off deer, dont know if they still have them. i used to take the train to sevenoaks livestock market with the pups and all the beasts milling round blaring and shoting soon put the pups off sheep and cattle after a few visits. kept a few hens in my yard to stop poultry worying. when i moved up here it was hard for an outsider to get permission, but try to get to know as many locals as you can, become a regular in a couple of little rural pubs and chat to people. ask for ferretting permission, dont mention the dogs at first but after a couple of trips to show you are trustwothy ask if you can bring the dog for marking as you can do the job more thoroughly. always be polite and if the farmer is busy when you arrive ask if you can lend a hand. this way you may get recommended to other local farmers. good luck 1 Quote Link to post
gamerooster 1,179
i find that if you ask to catch moles first you always get a lot more yesses, then after a couple of visits crop up the topic of 'oh, when i am here i could do the rabbits to!!!', its always worked for me Quote Link to post
