ledders666 6
Does any one have any advice to help encourage my dog to mark holes, she is very keen at sniffing them all but doesnt give a clear mark. Any thing i can do to train her for the stronger scent? Thanks Quote Link to post
terryd 8,955
With mine the penny just dropped that is he twigged if he showed me the hole as a rule I could show him the rabbit. I can remember the first time like yesterday even though it has too be 27 years ago I could show the exact place in the hedge now. So I think if you can bolt rabbits in front of her and show her plenty of action the penny will drop and maybe you can read her marking signals better Quote Link to post
ledders666 6
She understands that rabbits come out when ferrets go down, so time i think will work if nothing else Quote Link to post
darbo 4,779
also if you know any spots where you can see rabbits outside the warrens . walk over when they have dropped in then let the dog check them over. at least you know yourself they are occupied and watch her for giving signs. some dogs marks are much more subtle than others. it is just a question of getting out and letting her gain experience. 1 Quote Link to post

True mate and all dogs mark different as well, you have to learn to read the dogs signals Quote Link to post

R.A.W 1,987
i'd say take her with another dog that is 100% when that dog has marked put it on a lead .know let your pup have a looked. watch your pup closely some dogs are very subtle and all mark different. after a few atempts your know when theres something home. she lookes a real nice bitch mate . goodluck. atb RAW Quote Link to post

ferret1988 20
My dog is a patterdale she is from good stock that are used for all quarry was having this problem with her when she was younger she just didnt seem intrested and when she did she didnt seem to mark clearly, last season was her 2nd and i had come to the conclusion she was a dudd and not worth taking out as she would just seem to mess about. Anyway she is 3 now and has been out a fair bit in the last couple of weeks and to my suprise she is like a differnt dog! she as started marking and clearly at that she is finding holes we can not see for long growth and will check all holes and when she does mark goes straight to ground but comes out after about 2mins as though to say rabbits at home please ferret lol She also as not once false marked and am now fully confident of her just shows some take time i had tried alsorts to get her going but nothing worked guess some need to mature and it will just come when there ready. so dont get too dis hearted mate sure she will come good with age Edited September 25, 2012 by ferret1988 Quote Link to post
