jigsaw 11,902
do you Irish guys and gals think, with so much rain weve had over the summer, what effect it will have on the hare population. All the farmers are moaning about the land being sodden and the crops being way behind this year, just wondering if it might have an effect on the young hares coming up?I was thinking the mortality rate would be fairly high due to the non stop rain since x mass.Any one have any thoughts o this

paulus 26
wouldnt know about ireland but there definatly down in numbers here this year, i was out when the barley was taken in last week and there was nowhere near the amount thats seen normally. shame really as they were comming back well. as for buzzards it was like a something from hitchcocks "the birds" soaring buzzards and crows following the combine. neil cooney 10,416
Yes,the constant rain wont have helped as it means a lot of liver fluke and that can effect the hare but the late hay harvest should help things a bit. The severe Winter we had two years ago either starved or drove the buzzards to pastures new around here and as a result the hare had a great breeding season last year. Anyone who thinks the buzzard is a scavanger should spend more time in the country and less time in front of the TV.

skycat 6,174
I don't know about hares in Ireland, because I don't know what sort of crops you grow, but over here, despite a silly amount of rain fall from April through till July, we've got plenty of hares doing very well in East Anglia. I think that a lot is to do with what sort of cover and protection they can get from the rain. Hares do very well in rape fields where the leaves protect young leverets from the wet, and I've seen lots coming out to graze on grass tracks between the fields: half grown leverets. I would think that hares born during that first hot month we had in March would be of an age to survive prolonged wet weather so long as they can keep reasonably dry in leafy crops, hedges or woods.
