Gaz_1989 9,539
In a recent thread of mine I said that when I've moved house I will be building the dogs a 28' x 5' run attached to a double garage where they will have a 6' x 6' kennel inside with a raised bed. A few people commented and said this would be too big and 3 smaller runs of 8 x 5 would be better? But then the kennel would just be a wooden box and if that's a 3' box then the run would only be 5' x 5'. What problems could a run that's "too big" cause? Cheers Gaz Quote Link to post
paulus 26
ive got 2 one is 16 x 6 run with a 6 x 4 shed with a raised bed board and the other is 10 x 6 run with a 4 x 4 shed with a raised bed board. ive just roofed the smaller of the runs and will be doing the same to the larger one later on this summer. gnipper 6,978
The main problem I can see mate is your planning on keeping 3 dogs together in there, I know people do keep all their dogs in together but imo your just asking for trouble and there's an old saying kennel 3 bury 1. It only takes something daft to cause a kick off. 4 Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for the replies. I do like kennelling my dogs together, not due to lack of space or laziness, but I like them to be able to roam freely around the yard a lot of the time and come indoors from time to time so would hate to have 3 or 4 dogs that I had to keep separate. However I have given it some thought and I think I am going to divide the area up into 3 pens. The end one will be 8 x 5 and have a large kennel in it and be kept as a spare for future (in case I need to split or a friends dog comes to stay etc), and the other section will be 16 x 5 with a gated panel in the middle for my dogs (connected to there kennel in the garage) - with the possibility of closing the centre door and making it into 2 pens of 8 x 5. Thanks Gaz Quote Link to post
Floyd17586 454
The easy way out of it is if your worried about your dog fighting if you bring another one in.buy a pup and train it yourself.also it will be raised up with ur dog so shouldnt fight. Quote Link to post

I aren't particularly worried mate but I can see why it would be useful to have the option to split them up if needed. I'm moving house and will have a few grand to spare to spend on kennels so I want to do a proper job and make it last. My 2 bitches I've got now are inseperable and fret if parted and honestly can't see them fighting. And I do plan to have a young pup when I get another dog so fingers crossed they will get along Quote Link to post
paulus 26
ive got two together sire and son, they have been together since the pup was 8 weeks old that was 5 years ago this christmas, only ever had 2 scraps one when the pup got to about a year old and the old dog put him in his place then when the pup got to 3 he put his sire in his place. never anything more than the odd bite and posturing. if i seperate them they dont do well at all. Tiny 7 1,694
I was one that i agreed that it was too big.. But what iam trying too get across too you is IMO, you'd be better of with seprete kenneling for each dog, Theres been a lot of dogs killed in kennel fights, theres bitches in seasons, feeding, When a dogs sore or injuryed they want left alone ect, Thats my point in your 28'x5' design not the size i think you could use it a bit better , Its your kennel fellah you have it what ever size you want but iam speaking from expercince here with paired + in kennels Quote Link to post

Carraghs Gem 1,713
Im going to be kennelling 2 together, my run is currently a tiny 2m x 3.5m but im extending it to 4m x 5m soon and will prob extend it again after that to 4m x 7m when I can afford to do that with a 2m x 5m pen alongside it Space isnt an issue here so much of the time I let the dogs roam free in my yard Quote Link to post
