Persuading a bitch to stand?

Recommended Posts

Anyone any tips for me? My old bitch (8yr) has come into season again and I'm wanting to line her with my chosen stud, I tried last year , had the stud dog up at mine for a week and just left them to it, every time he went to mount she slammed her arse to the ground and the opportunity was soon missed, I noticed first blood on Wednesday and I'm hoping to travel down to the stud dog a week on Monday which will be the 12th day, I'm not wanting to force the issue but feel if I can't get her lined this time I'm not gonna try again and I know in the long run I'll be gutted so I'm looking for any tips that can help me in my quest, thanks.

Ps 6 pups are already spoken for (have been since I first spoke of this possible mating 3-4 yrs in the making) and I have had interest off of here for any extras before anyone gives me the "too many dogs being bred" speech,

8 years old is a bit old for a first litter: the pelvic girdle and associated ligaments are nowhere near as flexible and supple as they are in a young bitch: if you do get her mated then be prepared for a Caesarean delivery.

If you are determined to try and breed from the bitch then it is not a good idea to just 'let them get on with it', for any number of reasons: if the dog does actually penetrate the bitch she may turn and snap at him. If they do tie then she may struggle like mad and rupture the dog.

You may need three people if the bitch is unwilling: one to hold her (muzzled) head, the other to support her back end to stop her sitting down, and possibly a third to hang on to the stud dog still if the bitch still tries to fight like mad once tied.

When I say get on with it I mean not unsupervised,

It's mad the struggle people have to go through to get a bitch lined but you can guarantee if she got out some scraggy arsed cur would nail her first time with no trouble or ruptured cocks or anything.

I would have had a pup out of this mating if I hadn't got the pup i have now  there's still a chance once the missus sees them  AYE THAT'S A JOKE. Cracking dog she is!

Sometimes you can't win. If the bitch is young then she's unproven and your a peddling baastard. If the bitch is older and proved herself time after time and your prepared and have been for years then it's too late for the bitch physically and you would be in the wrong for mating. Can't do a thing right on here!

And that's not aimed at you skycat, just a general observation.

Ross, if you need somebody to AI for you, I'll volunteer my services. Once I've had a few ciders mind

mate if you ai get it to a vets to do it mat cause you could end up with a nasty infection if you dont have everything clean and in tip top condition. its only £50 - £60 few miles down the road from me.

10 - 15 for a sperm test

10 - 15 to test when the bitch is ready

30 - 40 for ai
