genetics v ability

picking up on what country joe said on the ballyregan bob topic about him and scurlogue champ being virtual non starters as stud dogs producing very little of quality, does this mean that in our world worker to worker is best or are we better having a better understanding of the genetic make up of our dogs and looking further than the fastest or the best worker?

Its sometimes more rewarding to look beyond whats stood in front of you,a grandparent will usually have a better history of producing the goods than a diluted progeny.

yep, i was always told , look back at the (3rd + 5 Gen) to what kind of dog you could get .? But i think genetic's is everything in any animal , you will get the best+ worst from it . With a working dog, breed best to best, not all pups will be as good as there parents, but those that do make it will be your line for the future.

I've always said that if you see a real good dog and want one like it, use its sire, as that the one that made it, rather than using the dog it's self.

Yep,i'm with you guys, why have 1/2 when you can have full if a good dogs sire is still doing stud duties..it's common sense or should be? ATB Andy.
