I know Maggies are one of the worst vermin and should be culled at every opportunity but id check 1st its not illegal before taking one.

Not wanting to be a stick in the mud, but the rspb etc do read these forums

My dad had a tame maggie as achild but thats going back 50 yrs or more

i have heard of peopel that have saved the maggie once it was thrown out of the nest/ or predated by a cat. they were easy to rear and were totally unafraid of humans...

As a kid i had a couple of maggies well tame and easy to keep both learnt to wolf whistle and used to sit on the washing line whistling to each other.had jackdaws they were more active and mischievous.

my grandad had a pair of jays that used to go on the drey with him tatting and they could talk used to say rags and bones never caged any of the birds i had they used to sleep in the shed and fly free all the time all exept one of the jackdaws left on their own becoming wild once more within a couple of years the jackdaw that stayed lived five years before a cat got it.

If you fancy one and dont want to break the law cotact any bird rescue centre and they should sort you out.

My old man had one when he was younger didnt take it from nest though it just learnt to come to him for food full fledged one - used to leave the bedroom window open and it would pop in love hear storys about it - He named it Jacky.

 

I went nesting when i was a kid (wrong i know but i was only about 10 and a bit of a tomboy - watched kez too much ) and we took a young Maggie then. My Dad was raving mad with me but we kept it and he reared it well until my Step Mothers cat got him

Kept Jackdaws, as a nipper. All the usual. Been there. Done that. But what I wanted to say was that, about twenty five years ago now, in Portsmouth, there was a pet shop in Elm Geove. They had an ABCR Magpie in there.

 

Thing about this bird ~ and I don't know why and the people who owned it couldn't say why, but we all agreed; It seemed a little on the small and light side. Might have just been perception? But I thought it straight away and mentioned it and the guy didn't hesitate to quite agree.

 

Funny, that. His view was that it probably just never got what ever it would have got in the wild and so was a tad runtish. Maybe. Maybe we were both just suffering the same dillusion of thinking they were bigger than they are?

 

I've handled plenty of wild ones since. Can't say though as, obviously, my memory of a bird seen a quarter of a century ago has rather dimmed by now.

 

Anyway; There ye go.

Perhaps had less plumage being indoors in the warm? Their tiny underneath it all aren't they.

My mate had one for years that used to fly free and go everywhere on his shoulder and nibble his ear. I think his dad necked it in the end for drinking his brew all the time or biting him or summat

my dad had a pet jackdaw when he was a kid, and taught it to talk. i have a couple of friends with pet jackdaws too.

i've always fancied a pet magpie...could be handy for finding money...

Did a few Jackdaws when I was a kid! cracking birds when Imprinted and will follow you everywhere, mine would follow me to school and also chase me and land on my should while rideing my old push bike, they're easy to Hand rear and pretty greedy, meal worms are good food plus some boiled egg and a few Maggots, I also a little drop of vitamin powder or Cod Liver Oil too.

 

there was lads who did Magpies down this way and they was just the same, another lad did a Jay but to be Honest his was a bit spooky but then it could well be the way he did it, Hand rear them and spend plenty of time socialising with it and Bingo. one other thing about my Jackdaw is it started to Talk! it would say things like "Jack" and "Come On" but thats about it.....
