Wouldn't use catch alive rat traps...waste of time and money.....get yourself a couple of Mk4 fenns or BMI 55 or110s....you'll soon clear 'em up

your right live trapping will catch a few but them big ones may wise up.go fenn or magnum they are better, cheaper and more productive than standard cages.

Hi folks,

I'm thinking maybe you've had similar problems and perhaps you have a remedy.

We recently discovered we have a rat problem which is ok because it's partly why we got a patt. Of six humane traps we've had out only one has given us a rat, which was our pups first look at a rat and sure enough he went crazy for it dispatching it with one quick shake, very pleased.

Anyway the problem is we keep returning to the traps to find food gone and trapdoor shut or sometimes still open, but no rat. I'm wondering if mice are setting them off and then escaping through the bars. So I have now put traps back in boxes leaving one end open for trapdoor but this still leaves a potential escape route for the mice. I have to say the little bleeders have the upper hand at the moment so any experience or tips would be great, especially as the dog is climbing the walls looking for the next one!

Cheers ade

OK, first things first. You should know that releasing a trapped rat for a dog to kill is illegal, and has been since 1911. Posting that you have on an internet forum that is regularly watched by the police and other authorities is a bit stupid.

Right, that's got that out of the way.

Next question has got to be why have you got rats? What is attracting them, and where are they living. It's all very well putting a few cage traps down (please don't call them 'humane'), but all that you will do is catch a few. You will never solve a rat problem by cage trapping alone.

There was a very good thread posted by Ditchshitter in the 'Living off the Land' section some years ago. I'm not sure if it's still there, but if it is, it is well worth reading.

put 6ml galvinesd mesh round the traps

That may help reduce the mouse problem, but I prefer the advice given by Longnetter below:

A few well placed Fenns in semi-permanent tunnels pick up passing rats before they get established.

If you have rats then do as others have said remove the food source, if its not you then somewhere in the neighbourhood has got rabbits (in hutches) chickens guinea pigs, over feeding the birds etc etc. over feeding is the main cause that I as a pest controller come across.

Rats need what we need - food, warmth/shelter, water. take one away then your cured
