I thought I would add a few words as my old 3/4 bred collie/greyhound had the same thing happen at a similar age,the most obvious thing is it depends on the break and the type it is,it also depends on where it is,but your only as good as the vet that does the setting,I used a specialist greyhound vet in north wales and he was not a money grabber, mine was her back left leg and was a green stick spiral fracture, not a straight break,I told him if she could not run 100% afterwards then he's best putting her to sleep there and then,he assured me of a full recovery and set her,he kept her in for 2 days, antibiotics and pain killers ,charged me 65pounds 8yrs ago.She had a full life catching anything asked of her untill this year when I retired her to a lad that just does rabbits and a bit of mooching, the reason being that I ferret at least 4 times a week and on cold days standing around she used to stiffen up on that leg, this lad had asked me for her loads of times so I let her go to him and she's doing alright for him.I can't see why your vet needs to see the pup every few days other than to milk the cash cow,the antibiotics will cover the infection and the hard dressing will not get too tight if you keep an eye on it,so long as the dressing does not rub away the skin too much you should be ok,you should however prepare yourself for a shock when the dressing comes off as the leg will look withered and will take a bit of time on the lead to build up again, being young can help but if your break is very near to a knuckle or end of bone it can stunt the growth on that leg and it will all of been in vain,I hope your pup recovers fully but be aware of all possible outcomes,at the end of the day it is a running dog and sentamentality should not rule your head, atb,WM

I had a terrier pup break its hock at 12 weeks. It wore a splint and stayed in a cage chewing on bones to keep it fairly still and out of mischief for 4 weeks followed by a few more weeks on the lead. It healed great, she is 11 now and fit as a fiddle. Try to be patient and do not rush to get it doing too much too soon. Lots of positive tales on here so far. Good luck!

Im 99.9% certain your pup will be fine.. .. i had a dog break it's back hock back in 2000 which was a bad affair..he was 9mth old and some how dug his back foot into the floor turning on a rabbit resulting in the joint being pile drived so to speak which in turn shattered into about 9 piece's..i was told by a so called dog lad that it was not broke so i stayed away from the vet's for a while...after the swelling would not go down and the foot was constantly held up i bit the bullet and went to the vet's..

The vet said he could do nothing with it now as it was fused..but thank fook in a straight line..he said he would of plated the break if i had went straight away but luckely i got away with it and the dog ran really good for many season's afterward's.. :victory:

i had a pup break its back leg at 8 week , it jumped off the back of the sofa , he's two now and not had a problem with his leg yet , for a 19 inch dog it can clear a 5 bar gate its healed good and strong ...just try and and give it plenty of rest i know its hard to do when there pups but it will heal quicker than you think and give it some calcium tablets ...atb...
