Gaz_1989 9,539
What do you favour and why? I'm getting a whippet pup from a litter born today. I was planning to get a bitch because my last lurcher was a disaster from day one. He was a sal/whip/grey. A lot of people said the issues I had were because he was male and trying to be the alpha male where in all reality it was probably because he was a saluki cross and I was a novice lurcher owner. Anyway, There was only one bitch born and it's spoken for so I'm left with the choice of waiting for another litter or going for a dog. Are dogs really less biddable and harder to train? What are the pros and cons? I aren't interested in breeding. Thanks Gaz Quote Link to post
donkdaniel 236
ive settled on bitches mate i just get on better with them mate i find dogs tend to go off and do their own thing where as the two bitches i now own do everything to please me some my mates preffer dogs and ive seen some really good ones in the field i find a softer aproch is better with bitches than dogs but as i said its only my opinion and can only talk about my own opinions if i were you try a bitch not because i think their better but because you obviously have it in the back of your mind that dogs are not for you id wait for a litter theres plenty about from good lines be patient and dont rush i wish i hadnt when i first started atb donk Quote Link to post
sowhat 1,572
Makes no difference in my opinion, it depends alot on the trainer/owner, and the general temperament of the dog /bitch. Edited February 28, 2012 by sowhat 1 Quote Link to post
patterdalejoel 669
if i wanted a bitch but could only get a dog, go for the shyer more biddable pup, not the big strong dog pup that runs up to you first, almost like a bitch.... but im probably talking bullshit....... Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks for replies. There's probably something in what your saying there mate. My dog was the most lively and bouncy of the litter, first to come and jump up and make himself known. He turned out to be a right handful. However I think like Donk said if I want a bitch in the back of my mind then I should hold out for one. Not get a dog and possibly regret it later on. Gaz Quote Link to post
scotty2306 37
makes no difference to me ive seen good and bad in both sexes.dog suits me better as in a litter the boys should be and usually are stronger and they do not come into season in mid winter when you want to run them, they do piss on every blade of grass and your car which is annoying lol Quote Link to post
donkdaniel 236
The other thing you might want to consider is the cross your having mate I don't know what your hopeing to run but for a first time lurcher you might want to consider something like a beddy whippet for rabbits or a collie grey for allrounder both easy to train bull xs can be very driven and difficult to handle although I have a bull x bitch here and she is very laid back until on quarry I also have a pup here at mo with collie and bull in it so we will wait and see but she's been a joy to train and bring on so far hope this helps atb DONK Quote Link to post
jcm 2,327
There the same to me all down to training i have a sal whip based dog and he is spot on Quote Link to post
Gaz_1989 9,539
Thanks again for the replies. I'm getting a full whippet. Really am torn now. Part of me thinking the dog will make an extra couple of inches and in theory be a stronger animal. But then the other side of me is saying if more bitches had been born then we wouldn't even be having this conversation. Gaz Quote Link to post
