thorny 100
I have a young Jack russell bitch fast approaching seven months. I plan to use her for flushing cover to lurcher and she is getting more confident with this all the time. She was breed from a guy who used both parents for mainly ratting. She has a real bit of fire in her belly and may make a descent little ratter, so just wondered at what age should I give her ago. Dont want to rush in and her get biten and put her off. Would I be best just going about it myself, or finding someone who would let me go out with them and there dogs for an afternoon, as this will be the first time I will of also done it. Look forward to comments Cheers Quote Link to post

wirral countryman 2,110
Once their teeth are fully down and able to kill the rats easilly, which is about 6-7 months really so I would be at it now mate,3 months is far too early and baby teeth will struggle with a large mature rat defending young,WM Quote Link to post

I even had to pull one of Her milk P4`s out as it had rotted with no adult tooth coming threw to take its place, all sorted now and she has a lovely set of gnashers, that rats had better run from. Friend of mine owns a livery yard could be just the place to start her, will get her down there next weekend. Quote Link to post

Elmer Fudd 2011 39
dont no about jrt if it was a patterdale it would be started working . the best way to get a pup going that works for me is let ferrets bolt rabbits and let the pup see them and away you go Quote Link to post
wirral countryman 2,110
Digging deep you have'nt got a clue on entering a pup properly and I feel sorry for any pup you own,it is barbaric and cruel to overmatch such a young pup and probably illegal, there's one thing it happening by accident but if you think a 12week old pup barely jabbed up and able to go out is a fair match to a full grown adult rat wieghing nearly as much as the pup then you are a rank amateur with no place owning a dog,I've kept good hard dogs in the past but would still never entertain introduction to rats before they have their large teeth fully down, introduction should favour the dog not the quarry 2 Quote Link to post
