Any type of dog will catch a rabbit, I had a Doberman that caught the odd daytime rabbit, more to good luck than anything else, but they cannot be classed as "rabbiting dogs". If you just want a bit fun with a collie, why not ? But you will probably get sick of missing far more rabbits than it will ever catch.

Cheers.

The dam to my bitch had caught rabbits on the lamp for 4 seasons and amongst other things she was first used as a ferreting dog and done well cracking mark to her, then decided to lamp hethesis caught more then one or two a night that I can promise you lol the bloke used to do alot of digging and can remember going with him one day on a dig and the collie was lose , it dove in at the dig to draw it out and dispatched it lol I asked had she done that before, never really thinking before of a collie chipping in at a dig apart from a mark, I knew she had done a few Charlie before and all he could reply was " suprising uh" so in all if the Collies the right type it can throw there hand to anything it's more about how much opportunity you give the dog to learn it's trade

my inlaws keep collies, they are all working stock but there is a bit of variation in the dogs they have, when i was getting out the army i didnae have any dogs to hunt, an i used to keep meself ticking over most days either with a borrowed whippet off an officer in my regiment or a mooch with the collies or ferrets, i then knew i had the chance to get our own place an my own dogs, so i went an bought a lamp an other bits of kit so when i got a pup id have all the gear ready for it

i dont know why, but 1 night i took 1 a the collies out on the lamp an she caught a few bunnys, but i gotta say she missed a lot more than she got, well after that i was out most nights with them collies, an 1 of them was a leggy hill collie, this dog could catch bunnys, but was often made to look daft when it come across a decent bunny, thining back id say his catch rate was about 25% of what he run, i still take the collies out now an again, mainly when my lurchers are in sick bay, i get a good laff with the collies lamping, but an there is a but, i dont take it serious when im out with them, they will never compare to a lurcher on bunnys, but they can be good fun :D:thumbs:

Hello there jus wondering if a pure bred collie as got it in it to catch a rabbit i know there gd to cross with the right dog but can it turn out run a rabbit without any whippet or greyhound in its blood thakns for any comments

A few years ago after a hard winter here in Northumberland, a farmer friend of mine, his collies were killing hares that had come down sickened by the weather, and at all times of the year they killed foxes, leaving them on his door step..think they could do rabbits ok..

Worked border collies day and night and all i can say is a border collie has not got the speed to catch a daytime rabbit bolted from bushes over a field here in south yorkshire.....havent got the speed....end of, but if it is a short chase from bush to bush or through woods then yes its possible. I used to lamp two collies together had great sport.

Grew up with a mongrel collie (my Granddads border collie bitch that got nailed by the local garage guard collie type mutt) that could catch rabbits both day and night. Every time we went to the caravan for our hols she would always manage to slip out to hunt and a multitude of critters would turn up at our door, rabbits, hares, pheasants, ducks, chickens and the odd cat! She was no where near fast enough for the hares but could stalk 'em like a feline. Though if you were out with her she would attempt to run everything and very rarely stalked.

My kelpies take the occasional rabbit, rat, squirrel and pigeon but as soon as a rabbit makes it out into the open I know it's lost.

All but one of the rabbits they've ever taken have been in either woodland, hedge or ditch bottoms or thick reed beds. The only one I ever caught in the open was a young one and my oldest kelpie caught it behind a trough so not exactly "in the open."

That said, although they may catch a fraction of the rabbits a half decent lurcher will, my smile is much wider than that of the average lurcher owner when they do get one...and they're virtually injury-proof too.
