Ideation 8,217
I had a call yesterday off young Tom asking if we would be out before xmas and if he could come and bring a friend. I told him it would be xmas eve, but he couldnt do that, and sounded a bit gutted, so i said we'd have a couple of hours out today. Had a funny night last night, woke up at about 2 am, with the dog going mental at the window! Looked outside and there was some c**t trying to break into the car. Half asleep, i wasnt at my most eloquent, and shouted something a long the lines of "f**k off you little c**t or i'll f*****g shoot you", but it seemed to do the trick, and he beat a hasty retreat. So i didn't get the best nights sleep, and was woken up by Tom calling me from outside my door. But 15 mins later, we were off, with a couple of jills, finn the dog, two 14 year old lads and me. The rain was hammering down, and we decided to have a good scratch about some ditches, had a good walk but didnt come across anything. Got a mark on a hedge row set, i stood one side with the dog and the lads stood the other (no holes netted), The aim was to run the rabbit into a warren in a near by gully and then ferret it from there. Of course, bunny came out non-dog side, and ran into the gully as wanted, but then did the old ninja bunny trick of disappearing off the face of the earth. After a bit more of a rake about, we managed a decent mark on a large set in a spinny. Netted up a good 30 holes, and left the two young lads to it inside the spinny while i went round the outside into the field to try and stop any runners with the dog. They entered my old jill and it went quiet. After a while i heard the first shouts from inside the spinny and rabbit number one was in a net, with Tom jumping on it. Rabbit dispatched and net back on and after a few more mins, the second rabbit bolted by Tom again, and he was quick onto it. Back down the jill trundled once more, and after a decent pause the third and final rabbit slammed a net by jake (toms mate), one which he had layed himself! After a slight hesitation chucked himself on it. Under instruction, he removed it from the net, dispatched it and pissed it With the rain still hammering down, we had a walk a long a ditch, which now was more a stream. Got another mark on a large set and netted it up. Down went the jill and it all went quiet for a long time, but there was clearly something at home. All of a sudden, like some kind of furry fish, a rabbit exploded out of the stream, taking myself and the dog by surprise, the dog ended up jumping into the stream and getting tangled in some submerged brambles and i just milled about like a fanny. Needless to say the rabbit got to saftey, although the dog had managed to get back on its tail before it slid under the fence into a no go zone. At this point Tom started moaning about the wet and cold, and we called it a day. I don't think we will let him live that one down in a hurry! But it was a good couple of hours out, and another young lad converted to ferreting! And i was home by lunch. Hopefully off out again tomorrow with johnnyboy 2 Quote Link to post

Ideation 8,217
Fair play to the lad, he had been out a couple of times with Tom and blanked, not even seen a rabbit. And never seen a dog being used. SO just walking about with the dog, watching it hunt and seeing it mark, and laying nets etc expecting to actually see a rabbit, made him really chuffed. And considering he had been shown by tom to show nets only recently, he layed them well, i never even bothered to check, and the rabbit was well pursed. And he was a good lad. So happy days all round. He even took two home for stew! 2 Quote Link to post
