Coyotehunter 689
Sounds like your pup has got a bit of Coccidiosis, nothing too bad to worry about, just put him on a short course of sulphur based antibiotics, Unless your feeding him up the arse 28% isn't going to harm him, what's the fat content ? BULL 100
The amount of protien is moot point as it's advertised 28 -30% protien and that's all people look for in a complete food but what most over look is the fact that the protien is derived from wheats whey cereal etc it needs to be a derivative of meat to constitute a proper protien analysis of say 30% as dogs absorb nearly all meat protien but shit out most of the cereal based protien as they are carnivores just look at the size of a dogs shit if you feed a nice amount of wag then the exact amount of eucanuba the turd will be much smaller hence more protien synthasiS down side is a bag of the best meat based complete is in the £50 region
stabba 10,745
most likely a touch of Colitis or coccidiosis..a short course of anti biotics should do the trick..if in doubt seek vetinary advice..atb stabba
sandymere 8,263
Passing blood in the stool would be an unusual symptom of protein in the diet; rather one would expect a bleed within the gastric tract. Fresh blood, undigested, would likely be from lower down ie in the colon and black stool, from digested blood, higher up in the stomach. Things can be muddied if the dog is eating lots of fresh bloody meat. Ones first thought might be infection causing inflammation and bleeding. Its always dodgy on forums as the whole picture is not there, ie the dog, and the vet has seen it so they have a better idea. Often what a vet says and what an owner hears are two different things. The protein was likely an aside rather than a cause of the symptoms and is open to interpretation, they tested puppies and found that anything below 17 % caused growth problems but anything over did not. So in theory 17% will do but I'd not raise a pup on 17%. There is evidence that to many calories is a problem and may cause growth probs but not sure how relevant the % of protein is within that. I fed my last youngster on 24% with added rabbit, table scraps, cooked veg and he did fine etc, others do well with higher protein, 28% is higher than I would use but many would recommend it including some vets. It’s likely that body weight is the most important and avoiding the traditional fat pup for a slightly leaner body shape to even out growth rates reduces problems later. Those on lower protein seem to grow slightly slower but still end up the same size. If there are still symptoms I’d have another chat with the vet and get an explanation of what is causing the blood. Feed just the complete for a day or so and if still passing blood vet, or chicken and rice for a few days then if still passing blood vet. PS, Protein is protein and is digested fine from dog food whether it be from animal or vegetable sources, as long as there is a percentage essential amino acids all will be fine on that front all the dogs can't digest cereal etc is utter clap trap. chilly 59
i had a problem with my pup passing blood also , i was advised that it may be colitus , and was also told to starve the pup for one day , then feed plain boiled rice and plain boiled chicken , with some natural pro biotic yoghurt added for the first few days , work a treat for my pup she was on the rice and chicken for a few weeks and was then slowly back on her normal food
