Carraghs Gem 1,699
a neighbour whos land i have permission on has freisian x weanlings. lately there seems to be a beast dyeing every other day. they are litterally just dropping on their sides and having seizures and dying within 2hrs it sounds like they have been poisoned to me. the current theorys are 1. metal poisoning, its not unheard of for waste batterys to be dumped in fields and end up in silage 2. poisonous plants in silage 3. something in the feed, they feed a mix of meal and waste bakery products mainly bread but some cake products 4. deliberate poisoning by jealous neighbour or disgruntled former employee
jetro 5,349
is there a lot of rag worth or benn weed on the land. i know that if it gets into the silage that its deadly for live stock. atb j.
Carraghs Gem 1,699
unlikely to be ragwort as i havent seen any on his land.
Hannah4181 260
Probably an idea to get a PM done asap on a dead beast, before he loses more. Few cases round here last summer of cattle being killed by ingesting the left over metal work from chinese lanterns.
kenny14 656
Tell them to get the carcasses post mortemed asap (if that's not already being carried out). It's not worth waiting till they're all gone.
jetro 5,349
is he feeding meal or grain to them. as hannah said he should get the vet to do a pm asap. also he should check his feed for them. atb,j.
Carraghs Gem 1,699
it would take a while for all his cattle to drop dead, he has over 500. his silage pits are each the size of small football pitches dont think its chinese lanterns as id expect to see blood, no scour either. Well if he can afford to lose a beast a day, without getting a PM done, then he's doing better than any cattle farmers i know. The metal from the lanterns is ingested and poisions whilst in the gut, its very small and fine wire like stuff, you wouldn't see blood!
Carraghs Gem 1,699
he prob will have a post mortem done, lets just say they are in a good financial situation. to say anymore would be a breach of trust and privacy.
