somebody bumped into me and made me slip, i overreacted bigtime

I was in northern pakistan going to do a glacier-crossing,we had to walk along a few kilometers of goat-track and shepherds paths to reach the glacier, some of the tracks barely had room for 2 people to walk abreast with loose rock and uneasy footings,I had an almost overwhelming compulsion to push a companion over when he paused to look over the edge,I think the drop was maybe 120-150 metres at that point,a long fall into a rocky valley bottom.

the other wierd thing about it is if you were walking along a normal path that had a four foot rail alongside it you'd know for a fact that even if you slipped and fell against that rail you wouldn't

if you fell only the last 1cm would hurt

Yeh its not really the fall that bothers me, more the concrete at the bottom

mind over matter my dear boy mind over matter    mind ive never minded so its never matterd

How many of you developed this fear after you had kids? Just wondering if it's a kinda survival mechanism as a few have said they were fine when younger?

With me when I notice how high up I am and that if I fell it would be certain death its almost like my brain doesnt trust my body not to chuck itself off! I think "jesus, thats a long way down if I was to jump", then I think "shit, I hope I dont jump, better grab summat". Always gotta look down though, not happy unless I've taken myself to the edge and had a good look down...

the other wierd thing about it is if you were walking along a normal path that had a four foot rail alongside it you'd know for a fact that even if you slipped and fell against that rail you wouldn't go over it.................and yet on the top of a tower with a four foot rail you know for a fact (in your head) that if you fall against that rail you'll do a WWF style topsy turvy over that rail and fall to you death, it's not just a possibility, it would definitely happen!

Its interesting other folk have the same things i do, that feeling that you want to jump, and the one about the rail, and how it wouldn't stop you falling..............although mackems desire to kill folk is disturbing :D

once had to go to france on a job from work. we flew to lyon airport and i rented a car and drove up into the alps. i honestly shite myself the road to this factory was nothing more than a dirt track up a fecking great mountain with 1000s of feet drop down the side. and if that wasnt enough to empty your bowls there was these mad french lorry drivers hurtling the oposite way down this track. i got to the factory at the top opened the door and chucked up my champagne breakfast that i had on the plane

I can even relate to that. With me it's like a compulsion to do something that no one would be expecting, just to see the reactions. For example, if I'm sat in a meeting everyone else will be concentrating on what's being talked about....I'll be thinking I wonder what everyone would do if I punched the bloke next to me in the head as hard as I possibly could. Or when I'm at the inlaws and they've just made a really nice spread, I'm sat there wondering what they'd all do if I just stood up and flipped the table over with all the food on it, and someone having a baby is another one, as soon as they pass it to me I start wondering what they'd do if I just chucked it on the floor.....does anyone else get this or is it just me?

I get that as well, terrified but then i get that thing in my head saying, 'imagine how i would feel if walking along that rail/ balancing on that ledge/dangling of that window sill' mental how the human mind works.

I wonder if your fear of heights would be affected if you got diagnosed with a terminal illness? if you knew you only had 2 weeks to live would it subside or would you still be as bad :hmm: Hopefully we'll never find out but it's an interesting though.

does anyone else get this or is it just me?

A friend who works on the railways never used to stand on the dge of the platform,he told me he used to see some folks with manic or glazed looks in their eyes as they eyed up people standing close to the edge as a train or tube was rattling towards them,I think its in a lot of people.
