I had another humiliating experience at York castle, I was on the top and didn't realise how low the side walls were so froze and couldn't let go of the hand rail on either side. Next thing there's about 3 or 4 seven year old kids stood behind me asking me if I could move out of the way and let them past but I couldn't let go so they had to go round the other way!! :icon_redface:

Oh my word, again you have tears rolling down my cheeks

I nearly had tears running down my feckin cheeks at the time. At that moment if someone had have given me the option to take a tablet that would have instantly put me out of my misery I'd have taken it in a heartbeat! and those kids would have given me their fruit shoot to wash it down with!!!

the other wierd thing about it is if you were walking along a normal path that had a four foot rail alongside it you'd know for a fact that even if you slipped and fell against that rail you wouldn't

if you fell only the last 1cm would hurt

Yeh its not really the fall that bothers me, more the concrete at the bottom

I have all on to try and not dive away from the glass into the middle of the room

Not scared of heights but have a horrible compulsion when standing looking over the edge of cliffs or on tall buildings rooftops to just jump and fly...

That really distressed me, seriously, i am terrified of heights..............

I'm well impressed with myself....I've single handedly made half the forum grey (including myself!) in one morning! :toast:

I wont laugh at your stories, i can relate, i remember being at the top of a French castle, no health and safety and a 12 inch wall at the top, i lay on the floor and crawled back to the stairs...............

it's horrendous isn't it! are you the same as me though, in that even though you have these experiences you still keep putting yourself through it? There's an aquaduct near me (http://www.chirk.com/aqueduct.html)....I managed to walk across it and then freaked out and couldn't bare to walk back, but had to or I've have had about a 20 mile walk back to the car!! I had to stand and wait til no one else was anywhere near just in case someone wanted to pass me......why do it in the first place???????????

and then you get the urge to jump

Its weird, theres a little imp sitting on your shoulder whispering for you to run and jump.I was on the cable-car going up to do a tunnel-tour on Gibraltar a few weeks ago,my mate had to stand away from the edge and stare at the floor,he also couldnt look down the drop at the back of the rock.

Weird thing is as a kid i did abseiling and rock climbing  My fear developed as i got older. Few years ago in Oz, i was walking across a rain forest walkway about 50 feet up on a slippy surface and somebody bumped into me and made me slip, i overreacted bigtime through fear. Another time walking along a cliff top, the ground opened up and within 10 feet was a huge vertical drop, yet again the human slug took over as i lay on the floor and crawled away........

There's a road in Scotland that runs along the side of a mountain and there's a very very low barrier and a sheer drop to one side. My sister ex was driving along it with my sister in the passenger seat and me in the back, it's bad enough being near a drop like that but when you're not in control it's 10 times worse. The f'cker saw how distessed I was getting so 'for a laugh' started weaving the car. I'm not joking, I honest felt like smashing his head into the ground when we finally got to the end, if I wasn't weak with exhaustion I think I would have done. Not sure exactly how long that road was but it seems to go on forever..........horrible!!! my shoulders are all tense just thinking about it!

How many of you developed this fear after you had kids? Just wondering if it's a kinda survival mechanism as a few have said they were fine when younger?

With me when I notice how high up I am and that if I fell it would be certain death its almost like my brain doesnt trust my body not to chuck itself off! I think "jesus, thats a long way down if I was to jump", then I think "shit, I hope I dont jump, better grab summat". Always gotta look down though, not happy unless I've taken myself to the edge and had a good look down...
