simonrocco 175
i had my daughter to stay at mine last night and i asked her if she wanted to go ferreting today she said yes straight away shes been a couple of times with me before and she really likes it shes only 8 years old so today we set off after dinner and went to a little place i know in a wood theres about 6 sets in it and theres also a couple of dykes with a few little set on near the wood. we started to net the holes up on the first set this is the first time iv let my daughter put the nets on and she done a good job of it the last few times i took her out she has just watched me put the nets on. i was just letting her net the easy holes but i was really impressed with her for her first time doing it anyway we fetched her ferret with us its a sandy hob which shes called scratchy because it s always scratching at its cage door we also brought my jill and my 6 month old kit we entered the sandy hob it went straight down and after about 2 mins it showed face at another hole but quickly went back down it was in for a further 4 mins so i got the locator out and got a reading on 1 and ahalf foot so i started to dig but just as i was about to break through it moved to underneath a tree about 3 feet to my left so i gave it a min to make sure it wasnt going to move then i started to dig again it said it was 2foot down but about a foot down i hit nothing but big roots we ended up not getting that rabbit it was about 5 mins before the ferret came out so we just picked it up and moved on to the next set but by this time id bumped in to one of my mates who had got into the bottom of the wood hed got there before me and had done the dyke sets and 2 of the sets at the bottom of the wood so i had a crack with him he was trying a new ferret out hed just got but had nt caught anything anyway me and my daughter carried on ferreting doing the 3 sets that my mate hadnt done but there was nothing at home so we desided to head back towards the car there was a couple of sets which my mate hadnt done so we did those the first one we done had nothing at home but the hob was in for a while so i gave my daughter the locator and said go on then find it,it took her about 40 seconds and she found it i couldnt belive it must be beginers luck she cant work the depth yet but she found the area it was in the ferret came out not long after that and we took the nets off and headed to the next set it was one that i didnt know was there till the other day when i spotted it when i was walking the dogs so i netted this one up as it was in the undergrowth and i didnt want my daughter getting caught up in the brambles it was about 6 holes mostly in the undergrowth there was one hole on the dyke side that my daughter was watching. once all the holes were netted i desided to enter my jill shes turning out to be a good little worker this will be her first season with me anyway i entered her and about a min later we heard bumping the rabbit came out of a hole on my side it seemed to creep out checking if all was clear then bolted with the ferret right behind it the jill went back down and searched the rest of the set but there was nothing more at home my daughter was over the moon that we'd caught one it wasnt the best of days ferreting but we both really enjoyed it and i was really proud of her for putting the nets on herself and using the locator i was hoping a rabbit would bolt into one of the nets that she set that would have made her day but she' ll catch one soon in a net shes set herself it will just be a matter of time ill take her to a better place next time. hope you like the write up and pics atb 3 Quote Link to post

tegater 789
What a good day, its great for the kids, as long as they want to come. She'll be chinning them soon!! Is that an old Mk 1 box and hemp nets, I can't tell from the pics? Its funny how people do things differently and I suppose thats what make it a little interesting on forums like this, but I never reach for my spade until at least 10 mins in one spot, I always hope they bolt them first. Mind you, I dont know how many dead rabbits get left behind doing this. Nice little write up. Quote Link to post
