Ever wish you hadn't bothered getting up?

I was planning a lamping trip in the early hours of tomorrow so decided to get up reasonably early today to take the mutt for a quick wander so she could chill all day today ready for tomorrow morning. Nice little wander through the woods, not a lot about but not to worry, she has a quick dip in the river and then we start to head back. She chases a rabbit but cover to thick, she comes back to me and as we're walking off she suddenly stops and starts shaking her front foot and then licking it just below her ankle, then can't put any weight on it at all. I'm still not 100% sure if she's sprained her ankle or has stood on a wasp or something, she did something similar and was OK the next day and when we went back I noticed a wasps nest right where it happened, so I'm hoping it's the same thing here. If not she's twisted it literally going at walking pace, typical! If it is a sprain how long does it need to be rested for? a week??

 

Whatever happened the result was the same, I've just carried her for 20 minutes back to the car and am bolloxed now. Having a well earned brew! Not a good start to the morning.

you checked the pad proper rob.could be thorn or that.sometimes they arent noticiable.just press every inch of the pads mate.she will soon draw back if there anything in it.hope it nowt serious mate.some days f**k all goes right for you eh.

Do as scot says....try pads and toes. If she doesnt pull back then bend back the foot and squeeze against the leg like your using pliers and she will let you know if there is a strain there...

Cheers lads. Just pressed on every bit of her pads and nothing, just pushed the foot towards the leg and nothing still, the top of her toes on that foot seem a bit swollen though. I've just called her and she's walked without a limp, a bit gingerly but not limping......must be a sting do you think?

Couple of seasons ago my big dog had a few months off hanging his foot up. It was in the shooting season and he would come to the kennel door with his foot in the air....i prod and poke every part of his foot and nothing. Try up at his elbow and shoulder and still nothing. Anyway i'd take him along and see what he was like on the day and when he got there he was perfect, no limp, no pain and he jumped and ran at full tilt. Would go to the kennel the next day and he would be fine. Then after a week or so it would just happen again.

I checked all over the kennel to see if there was an exposed nail or something he was catching his foot on but nothing. I had to just put it down to him lying on it funny the odd night. As i said this was a few seasons ago and went on for about a month, he has never been bothered by it again.......

I've found it's all in the head sometimes with dogs, especially my lurcher. Sometimes he bangs his foot or sits on it funny, and he limps for a while until something or someone takes his mind off it.

On a serious note rob most lurchers are feckin babies they don't mind something hanging off there face but a little thorn will have them screaming.

We'd already been out for an hour though when it happened, and I was actually watching her when she pulled up. The whole shaking the foot thing makes me think that it must have been a wasp, it was like an instant pain. I'll let her have a kip for an hour and then I'll see if it's swollen any more or if she's walking OK on it. Friggin wasps, I can't wait for their to be a decent frost. If it is a sting that'll make it 2 stings each for me and the dog this year, sodding things! Well happy if it is one though, it'd be a trauma having her laid up for a week or two now. My cree torch has just arrived in the post aswell!

they are proper drama queens aren't they! I've never known dogs like them for that. A couple of times I accidentely stood on my mastiffs foot with walking boots on and I ain't a small bloke, he didn't even make a sound. Once I stepped near my lurchers foot, I swear to god I never touched her and she yelped....and then instantly look embarrassed (I didn't know dogs could actually express emotions like that!)....funny as f'ck!

checking for injurys on shoulders i hold the two front paws in my hands lift them right up till the two paws are basically sitting on top of its head.an injury free dog should not make a sound.

 

or if your not comfortable doing that.take the dogs leg in your left hand,and put the but of you hand on its elbow,and extend the leg with a firm push,but if hs toes are a bit swollen,id say it was prob a sting.more so if it just flared up quick.

As I was carrying mine back to the car there was a mixi'd rabbit sat near the road that she eyed up, I was half tempted to put her down to see if we had a little britain style instant temporary recovery didn't risk it though just in case it was a sprain!

If it was me, I would leave until there was no limping or obvious signs of discomfort when handled or manipulated and give the dog kennel rest.........this early in the season a week or two off wont matter too much and its better than aggrevating the injury and the dog carries it all season long JMHO

Roughly the same happened yesterday the lab came out of cover carrying her front paw it was a blackthorn nearly right in, just enough showing to pull it out with my nails then she was as right as rain

if it is a sprain,a good rub is get your chemist to rattle you up a bottle of olive oil and winter green,massage it in twice a day,works wonders rob
