rob190364 2,594
When I first got my jill 3 years ago (rescue) she was an absolute nightmare! Easily the worst ferret I've ever had, I think she'd been running wild for quite a while before she got rescued because when I picked her up she would go proper mental trying to bite me, and I mean seriously putting 100% into it, it was like she wasn't domesticated at all. The only way of avoiding getting bitten was by coaxing her with one hand and making sure there was no chance of her being able to turn her head round. If I give her a millimeter she'd go for me in an instant, how I didn't get bitten I will never know. Two weeks after I'd had her and been handling her every day she still was slowly getting better but still I couldn't give her a chance to get at me. Every other ferret I've ever had would be totally tame after 2 weeks, even the very young kits that hadn't had any handling at all. After about a month she was OK but ever since then she's been a right little tw@t with everyone and everything except me and my hob. She's bitten my dad when he's had them when I was on holiday, she tried to bite my mrs once but just managed to graze her leg (luckily....for me!!), she bit my partners brother. Now all of these things aren't too bad because I can quite easily keep her from people and my dad now knows how to avoid getting bitten when he's looking after them.....but, and this is the problem, she's a little shite with my lurcher. I'll have to give my dog credit, she knows the ferrets aren't to be touched and with some dogs the jill would have been history long ago. My dog sees the ferrets through the cage mesh when she's in the yard but she knows if she puts her nose too close the jill will try and bite it. When my pup was about 3 months old I tried to introduce her to the ferrets so I could leave them in the yard together, she had a great time with the hob, play fighting etc. etc. So I tried to introduce the jill and she walked straight up to the pup and bit her on the foot, not hard, and she didn't latch on, it was more just a semi hard nip. I take the ferrets out with the dog sometimes and let them run free on the field so the dog gets used to them, she doesn't go for them, sometimes tries to play with the hob but avoids the jill. I've purposely trained the dog to not get too close to the ferrets so there's no issues when ferreting. Last weekend I took the jill for a bit of ferreting on some ground I know very well. There are 3 or 4 warrens where there are no stop ends and there aren't loads of rabbits but a few to give the dog a few practice runs (this will be her first season). On one of the warrens a young rabbit decided to do a bit of hole hopping with the jill right behind it, as it flew out of one hole and into another about 3 meters away my lurcher pounced and the jill literally flung herself at the dog but missed by what must have been millimeters. Part of the problem with her is as well as being nippy at the best of times when she's out ferreting she gets seriously intense, once she's like an animal possessed! Has anyone else ever had a ferret like this? I've had about 10 over the years and never had one like this. She's proper clingy with me, when I go in the yard when they're out she won't leave me alone until I pick her up and then she's ultra calm. I think she's just bleedin mental to be honest! I'm hoping she'll just get used to the lurcher in the end after a few ferreting sessions. Before I got my lurcher I'd take my old mastiff with me ferreting just cos he liked watching and sniffing around, she'd always just ignore him. It's going to go one of two ways I think...she'll either get used to the lurcher, or I'll end up one ferret down one day when she pushes her luck too far! Quote Link to post
Elmer Fudd 2011 39
some ferrets never trust dogs .most will in the end but why risk getting your dog hurt just dont take that ferret with the dog .sound like the ferret needs a Quote Link to post
ferrety f 23
If she is a good worker i would give her time, she came good with you so may with the dogs. You dont know her history before she came to you, she may have been mistreated and if so it takes time for her to trust. Quote Link to post

Yeah I think she must have been, can't really think of any other explanation really. I would be getting shut either way, it's not really my way of doing things. Even if I have to get another jill for working with the dog and only use this one for when I'm using the nets then that's what I'll do. It'll be interesting to see if she ever does get used to the dog though, hopefully working along side each other during the season will sort it out. Quote Link to post

rob190364 2,594
I'm gonna start taking the ferrets out on the field with the dog almost daily now until the season starts, hopefully then they'll be so used to seeing each other it won't be an issue. Quote Link to post

I bought a set of clippers from Argos 10 years ago for 15 quid and that's how much I've spent on hair cuts in the last decade CHICKS!!! Edited July 7, 2011 by rob190364 Quote Link to post
