Young pup questions ?

A few months I acquired a young russell bitch pup now aged 10.5 months old , ive seen the dam and the sire both work - first class to fox on permissioned game shoots and are both very very game russells, my query is the pup i have is still quite puppy-ish and fairly timid shes now seen two carcass of legally despatched foxes on game shoots but has show no interest in them whatsoever , is there a solution to gee this little bitch along or is it maybe still to soon for her or does it sound as if she wont make the grade ? , i was thinking of keep trying her steadily maybe for another 6 months - and if still no interest in work off to be re-homed as a pet ? !!

She's still a pup, give her a chance. Some pups will sniff a carcass and not show much interest, Some will rag it about and don't want to let go of it, all pups are different. Some youngsters won't get stuck in until they see one alive, then the penny drops.

10.5 month + 6 month = 16.5 month give the wee pup a chance... i got a terrier here and he wont be getting a look at anything till he over 18 month ... no need to push a dog you'll only ruin it

Every terriers different, I've got a few pups on at the minute, some are mad keen and some are just coming to the stage where their confidence is just coming through. One bitch flew to the back of her run when i showed her a carcass, yet four or five more and she's mad keen. It's all about confidence and maturity, don't rush you pup it's the worst thing you can do "baby steps", some are just naturals and some are slow.

I always tell my kids this analogy "could you drive a car at birth", it may sound daft but that's basicaly what your asking your pup to do, everyone learns things throughout their lives as do your dogs.

try and bring out her confadence, if she is shy by treating her like a pup and forget the working side of things for awhile many sum open hunting on rabbits and see would rats or rabbits bring her to mouth game..sum dogs get put off young off foxes when an older dog is racking it around, maybe try using the tail for awhile :yes:seen many dogs like this sum make it with time but confadence is a major fact so bring it out over the next 6months..seen sum great sounds which were shy dogs

 yes mate thats the problem with trying to get them going when you use a hard dog they dont hear much baying its just banging and bumping and they normally dont take much from these expereiences.far better if you can get them spiked while you have a good baying dog working they seem to get alot more from it this way.atb anyway mate
