Interesting. There is a lot of bad feeling amongst farmers and the like about the wolves which were 're-introduced' into Yellowstone National Park. Turns out that the type of wolf they 're-introduced' was a much larger type of wolf than the ones which had been wiped out. Apparently, these big wolves are causing a lot of damage: even the elk moved out of the Park to avoid the constant hassle. Read this on an American forum.

 

Re-introduction of anything should only be done if the current society/wildlife/geographical climate can stand it without problems. IMO you can't go 'back' to the days of yore!

they suggested bringing back the wolve to help control the reds on scotland, of course its only 'RED' deer the wolves will hunt, not sheep, cattle and dare i say human

 

im up for the re-introduction of wolves and bear to the uk, i was only talking to a girl yesterday who wants a bearskin rug

i wouldnt mind a wolf cub as a pet either

There are people who want to reintroduce lynx. Ooh-er! Real big cats lurking around the lochs!

i cant see anyone, other than the typical towny/city dweller being honestly up for the reintroduction of our 'ONCE' natives.

Are the sea eagles a problem? I know that they are capable of taking lambs and, one nest when investigated was found to hold bones from several different species, including a Westie. They really are huge birds, they even dwarf the golden eagles.

 

Stalking on a Scottish island, we used to have a white tail that would follow the stalker around, swooping in to feed on the gralloch almost before we had the deer loaded on the ponies and away.

 

The thing is they are mainly pretty lazy (well ok, it's a survival thing, you get the most you can for the least effort) and will feed on already dead things for preference, the same as the red kites round these parts (they love the "blacktop buffet"). I reckon there's enough road kill in Norfolk to keep a fair few of them well fed, and I don't see a few pairs making a massive dent in farmers production.

 

As for the reintroduction of wolves and big cats, it'll never happen. The risk to humans is too big for the agencies to take on. Anyone releasing them would have to indemnify against damage and injury, it'd be too risky.

but it would look lovely and some noncey towny could write a childs book, similar to 'The wind in the willows' which educates all how mr fox and mr badger do no harm

Why do they have to introduce wolves to reduce the deer population? Plenty of people to do that, just don't charge so much.

interesting , are they the same sub specieces ? or some whim of the birdie boys so they have something else to look at

where are they going to nest ? no one knows any of the answers because such creatures have not existed in livivng memorey here on this small island of ours

i know one thing for certain and that is the reintroduction will cause conflict withing the countryside , more birdies watching more of what we do

since the extinction of sea eagles this islands population has probably increased ten fold and more , where are the nesting sites

i think this has been done underhanded and from what i heard from norfolk farmers it is also unwelcome but the minority rules again and not common sence

We had 3 sea eagles near me in Fife that were released a while ago. One flew into a pylon and electrocuted himself but the other two are going strong. They are massive. They reckon that these birds fly so high they can see Norway and regularly fly to and from for a few days. Now Norway will be approx 600 miles from me so i assume they must glide a lot. They are tracked on their journeys and i presume for them to come your way wouldnt be a hassle for them. These birds are released a lot up this way and i sometimes wonder how long it will be before they are caught doing damage and persecuted for it, Del.

Correct..... I know where your on about and they have photos of it on a pheasant kill. They have also witnessed them catching young poults, sheilding them with there massive wings onto fence lines and catching them.

What can you do but sit back and watch these feckers eat away at your profits.........i wouldn't want to be working a small cocker on shoot day when they things fly over a little hungry......

One problem with this, there is no verifiable evidence that Sea Eagles were ever in East Anglia. So it would be a straight introduction which is definately not a good idea!

very good point indeed lilvixen , no one knows what effect/impact this introduction will have only that the place will be crawling with more twitchers screaming for more bird rights and less sporting rights

Any introductions back into our very artificial countryside,should be taken with a pinch of salt! A few VERY high profile predators for the WOW factor and the PR.

Controlled by the "Raptor group" of course!

 

They may be spectacular birds, BUT,

Why cant we have as much effort into getting the song birds back .! Even the humble sparrow is in decline! It would mean far more to a great many people than a couple of

sea eagles.

 

But you dont here about the "song bird group"? Because you cant be one of the "COOL" gang if your not with the RAPTOR guys!

 

It would be interesting to see what the outcome would be if they had a questioner asking

Tom,Dick and Harry what they would like to see reintroduced?

you've hit the nail on the head there mate , also whilst on holiday we visited Norwich and there was a cow there outside the catheadral spouting her shite about all gamekeepers are murders and all falconers are thieves who export peregrines wholesale to the arabs and her and her sidekick had a couple of spotting scopes trained on a peregrine artificial nest ledge .......and a fecking big begging bowl for the unsuspecting joe public to donate to her case
