the_stig 6,614 Posted June 3, 2011 Report Share Posted June 3, 2011 (edited) Been a Paintef & Decorator since leavin school and gettin an apprenticeship, feck me thinkin about it , its 28yrs , been self employed 20yrs now , built up a good clientele over the yrs , havin a trade is ok as long as the work is there , if the work dried up id be fecked cause i know nothing else . at it 38 year - semi retired now - pick a brush up if i have to - turned my hobby into a job selling antiques and collectables these days ..did my city n guilds did artexing when the money was in it likewise with flecking and bonding . slung more wide vynal than i care to remember - painted all manor of steel - roof work; pylons (£800 a week in the 1980s), concrete plants, and even an oil rig .. ran my own buisness doing steel work, floors and new housing had a good living out the game and glad to see the back of it ... Greetings Brother Jigsaw ...we've had a couple of shit winters...now real busy 6 days a week(but prices still poor)...allways the same skint all winter busy as feck all summer...was Hamilton's for years but recently changed to Purdy's but only cos they was doing cheap deals on box sets ...feckin hate painting but too thick to do anything else!! lol you lads work for your selfs or on the books ..? Selfemployed (CIS) allways have been...was VAT regd till 3years back...i do mainly site work...we where doing mainly care home new builds until the crunch hit...mustn't grumble could be worse...Ive worked with some good lads and had a laugh...pays the bills! Your a lucky man doing your hobby for a livin, good thing about havin a trade is you can always go back to it if need be made good money out the job mainly from painting steel work - painting concrete plants on the books on a price we could knock 3 n half grand in 10 days - always aimed for retirement at 55 .. dealing antiques is a cracking way to make a living i take it for granted it dont feel like work .. look after it in the summer gets you through the winter ..-- Quote Link to post Share on other sites
