Penda 3,366
A good few years back in my teenage years i remember mooching this orchard on the edge of a country farm i uised to nick the plumbs and that out of there we,ve all done it lads or still do it it . Any ways i was stroling in between the tree when the biggest earth kick out i had ever saw caught the corner of my eye so i went over to have a mooch stook my head down the hole to have a smell and an investigation any way i had a look for foot prints and the prints i found were new too me then suddenly i heard a strange noise cumming from inside the burrow so i decided to move away from burrow and place myself where i could have a good view without frightening what was in the hole. so i waited and waited then all of a sudden this animal came out it was like a beaver with no tail asuming it was either a prary dog or a goffer not sue like but it was big it sat on the entrance for abit then took off that was my 1st encounter with a none native species and i nearly shat my self with excitement ha ha ha ha ha Quote Link to post
artic 595
Well Artic, There must be crossed wires as I was told straight out of the horses mouth. So to speak. Still, life's a learning curve and I guess we never stop learning. There are only three deer keepers within the Abbey and it's news to them. I've just spoken to one to check my facts and you've learnt them something new then, .....Cheers I love deer threads, what fascinating beasts they are.... Happy hunting to all.JD This is a fasinating thread. JD, I've not mentioned how many deer keepers/safari keepers within the location. I said I know them all. Like I said, PM me with this info your getting. It's interesting. Also that location is not the only place to keep these types of deer. There are a few places not too far away that have a nice number. As you know there are silly people reading this, and certain info is best kept away from these places. We're not talking run of the mill deer, and it would be nasty for some prat to go and attempt a stupid thing! Although I like to see them try! Oh and more thing, when cattle grids get covered, especially in snow/ice/branches/mud, it's a clear getaway for any hoofed animal in a park. Happens often. Ask your deer lad that. 1 Quote Link to post

RFYL, I think Artic and me are being very civil, not bickering, just a bit of harmless difference of opinion. Artic, just spent twenty minutes on the old 'dog and bone' with my mate. J Darcy 5,871
So how many reindeer live out in scotland? what were they brought to grt britain for? Hi HairyBush, Believe it or not once upon a time Reindeer were introduced to England from Lapland, but they never thrived. What many of us fail to realise is that Reindeer (caribou) were indigenous to our Isles quite recently. They, of course, died out, but man has introduced them again on several occasions in the past couple of centuries. None of these prospered and it wasn't until 1952 , when The Reindeer Council of the United Kingdom was formed that any progress was made. From Sweden a number of these deer journeyed and they have remained on the Cairngorms ever since. Sadly when i visited in the late nineties i didnt see any sign of the Reindeer, but i hope to one day venture back northwards to find out more about their history in our land. the Reindeer is the only species in which both sexes sport antlers..... great topic........JD Quote Link to post
