Injuries, how many do you get each season?

Recommended Posts

Yet again both lurchers are out of action. Nothing serious but i seem to always be beset by injuries! I work them alot, probably not as much as some but alot more than many, so i expect to have the odd problem but its pretty much continuous with one or the other. I keep them fit, feed them well, give them planty of recovery time etc Im on first name terms with a variety of vets and bonemen and have a whole cupboard of meds, ointments, wraps, ultrasound, linament, stapler and so on!

Is this normal or am i just unlucky? How often are your dogs laid up?

hardly ever, my own dogs are hardly out of action only the staff when he is sore, but the lurchers seem to be fine, and the ground is flinty n chalky around here, you must be unlucky :tongue2: , what dogs you running and whats the ground like ?

The main culprit is my bitsa bitch, muscle tears, strains, wire tears, implaled herself on a stick, amputated toe etc. Shes coming up 4 years old and is a good worker just a bit too driven and oblivious to the consequences. The other is jrtxwhippet 3 1/2 years old, hes alot hardier a few knocks every now and again and the odd wire cut, but he took a thorn straight into his eye last year and missed the second half of the season and lost some sight in the eye. The ground is not too bad, alot better than some places although fields can be small so hedge diving has to be done at times.

I wonder if its the kind of work? We do alot of daytime bushing, some of the runs are into or through cover or woodland which is hard on the dogs. I have to admit some of the injuries have been down to bad management by me, things that get up unexpectedly on shit ground etc.

Maybe im not so unlucky, there are plenty of dogs killed at their work. My problem is that these dogs will be worn out if this injury rate continues for another couple of seasons and i'd not get rid when they've worked so hard for me. Im heading for a pack of worn out cripples!!!

Fingers crossed the puppy is a bit more hard wearing!

 i bet there the kinda dogs that make you cringe when on a run, my two bitches both have foxhound in them so there feet are very tough, now and again they will get a knock but nothing that has holded them up for more than 2 weeks, apart from being sore in the face they do very well i think, , i mainly lamp so the runs are obviously picked which might help with the saftey side of things from time to time, atb with the pup,

Good thread Tyla.

This season my saluki x is on his 2nd, his second injury not long after recovering from his first! Again like you I do my best in husbandry. I'd say most of the time it's the way the cookie crumbles.

Yes a pain, and an inconveniance for sure.

Hard driving fast dogs in cover, especially woodland, will always pick up more injuries than those worked in the open. I cringe when mine blast through cover, but touch wood, the only injuries they've had this season have been prey inflicted LOL Having said that they missed a whole month of work due to the snow/ice so haven't done as much as normal.

Thanks for the replies. Glad its not just me! We have just spent the evening poulticing the jrtxwhip's toe, i thought it was knocked up at first but turns out its a blackthorn abcess, its now drained but still no sign of the thorn itself. The terrier has scratched his eye too, either beating yesterday or bushing today, and he's usually bullet proof! Ho hum, maybe a weeks R&R will do us all some good!
