hi all bit of a random one here ill try to explain right the age old problem i have a dayatate air ranger .177 that has a very very fussey barrel so im on the hunt for that magical brand of pellet i have just started today trying 2 brands so far

1,jsb exact 4.53

2,accupell

both round pellets

now what im doing is between different brand of pellets im useing my napier pull through kit to clean the barrel then releading it with 25-35 pellets then rezeroing my scope (im taking my silencer of then always rezero with the silencer of)

now my question is if i zero my scope with the silencer of and its on the bull then fit the silencer will it throw my pellets out of zero because what im doing is doing a 10 shot mag with out silencer then a 10 shot mag with silencer on then the same when i change brands ill put some photos up to explain more and i had my rifel on a bench at all times aimed on the bull

hi BJ

by the sounds of it you are doing it right, but i would leave the mod on and zero

through all your testing and brands, which ever group best then use them

and adjust you zero accordingly

the only time my mod comes of is to clean, and maintenance

if i am testing any new brands it stays on

try not to get your self frustrated,or you will loose it!!!

hope this helps

right nice one for that the only reason i did it this way is because i was getting 9 ish consistent shots then ill get a flyer of about 2 inch and i was trying to find out if it was clipping my silencer but looking at those groupings with silencer on i can safely say its not clipping as they are grouped im trying to find out why i keep getting flyers rossy08 will tell you about these flyers that im having nice and consistent then all of a sudden of it goes im wanting to go hunting but as it stands with these flyers im not even going to point it at quarry as its not fair if they get wounded but as you see from the pics having no silencer on to putting it on would there be that much difference as i have never noticed before as i have always shot with silencer on

hi BJ

your flyers may be down to damaged skirts!

do you lube your pellets?

what rifle you using?

also a way to find out if it is clipping,is turn your mod a quarter a turn between shots.

this will show any dis-alignment,also you will notice the group too!

your groups in post above seem ok just need to get em tighter

and as we all know this takes time! try doing 3 or 5 shot groups

hope this helps

This is intresting, you do learn something everyday, nice one davy and si, can anyone elaborate and give a reason why, im just curious, so when I swap from old silencer to new there is going to be a noticable change in poi (is this correct?) And need to zero again?

hi there Davy im using a daystate air ranger .177 and i dont lube my pellets but every time i load my 10 shot mag i always try to check to see if the skirts are damaged nice one about turning the silencer i can honestly say i would never of thought that and nice one si, ill always make sure i zero with silencer on it was just a comparison but i did not expect to see about a 1 inch difference in groupings from silencer on to the silencer off how come its like that ?????????????????

Hi Base jumper,

I was suffering with the same problem of a fussy barrel. Luckily a mate gave me some Falcon Accuracy Plus in .177, and these work very well in my R10, half thumbnail sized groups at 35yds. As for the differing POI with the silencer on, I would put this down to the harmonic effect on the barrel. The difference in weight making the barrel behave differently during the firing cycle. I tend to zero my combo as i intend to shoot it.

If you want to try some Falcon pellets i could spare you a few, also have Superdomes sat doing nowt, let me know pal

Kind Regards,

Mikey.

You'll always get a POI change when you take the mod on and off on any gun.

Even a 'recoilless' PCP does recoil a tiny bit and this movement happens before the pellet has left the barrel. As soon as you release the trigger, the hammer and other mechanical gubbins start to move one way and the gun reacts to this by moving in the opposite direction, every action has an equal and opposite reaction.... and by changing the gun's ballance slightly, the barrel is in a very slightly different place by the time the pellet exits hence the change in impact point.

I hope that makes sence...

Cheers.

Edit to say.... It is only a very small amount but it is there. PCP's are good but they can't defy basic physics.

well i can honestly say i have learnt something new today i would not have thought in a million years that the poi will move from having the mod on to having it of so the lesson learnt today people always zero your scope with the mod on if you usually shoot with it on that is  just another question how often would people expect to get flyers because out of a 10 shot mag i usually get one flyer of about 1 inch now can it be that i need to track down another brand of pellets i think what i might do is set up some more targets tomorrow on the back garden and do some more tests with mod on rifle all zeroed in shoot a full 10 mag at each target and put up my pics to show you all

Been to an indoor range today fired about 350 rounds with one flyer of about an inch and a half high right. I know you are re-leading your barrel with 25-30 shots, maybe try a few more. I have noticed that sometimes it takes a fair few till the groups tighten back up after cleaning. Perhaps 50 - 60?

Had the same with my Air Ranger in .177 being pellet fussy, also found it would change is point of impact even though I would leave it zeroed the day before :hmm:.

anyhow trust me Buddy I blasted my way through many different brands of pellets some of which was highly recommended for the Ranger! my final verdict for connsistant grouping was the H&N Field Target Trophy 8.66 Grain Pellets .

I don't use anything else mate now! they hit the zone I want them too which is good enough for me. I also sorted out the POI problems, this gun had the Shroud cut down and which has now been dealt with with the full length version and baffle, I also removed the action and found the two barrel allen grub screws under the action wasn't tight, after retightening the top and bottom Grubs its drops pellets near on top of each other.

also meant to mention while the action was off I removed the slingshot and smoothed it all off with some fine wire wool, I also did this with the cocking components in the action! it now runs as sweet as a nut...
