stroller 341
Although i dont have fish we lost over 30 frogs last year i think the cold weather just went on and on and on, i try to keep the pond ice broken but life gets in the way sometimes i forget. its a shame as i like the old frogs in the garden it keeps the slugs down and as im a gardener by trade i like a well kept garden and i collect herbacious perennials its a symbiotic relationship. Hope the fish make it mate
littlefish 598
My fishpond has been frozen over for a week now. The spring should tell a tale for the fish. I have left it as it is, not disturbing the ice. I can hear the filter feed trickling away underneath it all, fingers crossed the fish will be ok. On a positive note it is beginning to thaw here today
rex 8
Try puttin a couple of foot diameter pipes/tubes submerged in the water and sticking out the water, when it freezes it will allow an oxygen supply into the water
mattydski 560
You can get floating heaters that keep the ice clear, had one about 20 years ago, that was the business!!

Lost a few grand worth last winter... As for the pipes sticking out.. how do you stop the pipe freezing from the inside..?? Our pipe from the boiler has frozen inside a 3ft thick wall. so i am sure a plastic pipe would freeze.
albert64 1,882
is that fish dead russ its eye dont look clear? if your ponds deep enough they wont come to any harm do you salt them up before the winter sets in, i got rid of mine 18mth ago mine was just under 6000 gallon and it was heated in the winter it was covered by a frame then covered with bubble wrap even in the winter you'll be surprised how much difference this makes might save you losing a few fish albert

Yes salt the pond before and after mate... It is 7ft deep, yet still lost 5 fish last year, as the freeze was so servere.. The fish is one of the dead ones yes Albert. Was pretty gutted... There are probarbly 7 left bigger than that, and 8 or 9 a little smaller. When they have all gone, i will be filling the pond in. Just dont have the passion for it anymore... Cheers Russ.
