A good day out

Recommended Posts

Went out today with Flash28 and Warrior22 to check a couple of burrows above pheasant rearing pens. Brought along Scent and Mason. Tried Scent at a handy spot, went in started marking nearly straight away, gave a listen at the hole and could hear him trying to dig on. We gave him 10mins, he didn't move on much further so opened up to him at 0.7 as from what we could make out he seemed stuck. Must admit I was starting to lose heart a small bit. When we reached him he was wedged tight and cleared the tube in front of him, it only seemed a mouse hole. When we opened it up he shot forward and pushed his way on about 5ft further up the tube. This time we knew he was after meeting the pheasant killer so we opened up at 1.2 to him welded to a dead vixen

When we pulled out Scent we had an older dog with us, Glen, belonging to Flash28, we collared him up to let him run the burrow to make sure there was nothing else at home. He came back out so we just left him to his own devices as we cleaned up Scent. The old dog went missing so we put on the box and it read 20m down along the same bank. When we got to the spot it read 1.4 on the box and the old dog could be heard marking. I brought Mason down to the entrance hole to see if he'd pay any attention to it. I had the lead loose and as we got to it he just stared for a second and made a dart forward into the hole. He only went in about a body's length and met the game. I looked in the hole to see him locked on a fox, after only about 60 secs on it he pulled it clean out of the burrow and fox number 2 was accounted for. A fine dog fox. Both dog and vixen were nice and plump from the many pheasants missing from the pens.
