Casso 1,264
Does your runner earn his keep over a year, Say a bunny is worth maybe 4/5 quid ,you dont need to be to specific bout anything else,,, would your mutt earn enough to off set the cost of what it costs to keep him ? That includes feeding in the off season, vet , general maintenance, Or if not , is the excitment the dog/dogs brings when out , i know some lads live in better areas with access to more game , worth the cost of keeping him ,, is the value of a good day/night worth every penny,, Any comments welcome,,that includes the bullshitter,, Quote Link to post

Casso 1,264
yeah a lot of folk pay a lot of money for that rush or buzz in other forms, id rather watch the dogs run than jump out of a plane any day, maybe because i've never felt the need to jump out of one Quote Link to post

bratton 4
i just do it for the sport and enjoyment of watching my dogs do as i taught them but im sure if i could sell rabbits which my dog has caught for £4 each i would be a rich man atb bratton Quote Link to post
Casso 1,264
what im getting at more is say every bunny caught had a value say 4 quid, not selling just a value would that value over a year be greater or lesser than what he cost to keep him for that year,, i know its not why we keep runners, just interested,, Quote Link to post
KittleRox 2,147
What your asking is how bigs your bags.Who cares? Just do it for the enjoyment of being out there in the coutryside seeing the stuff around you and your dog/s working, 1 Quote Link to post
Paid 935
Mine earns his keep alone and alongside the ferrets, feeding himself, the ferrets and my other 2 dogs, though I still have to put my hand in my pocket at times for a bit of variety. He also puts a lot of food on my familys table, allowing us to spend more on other things. For me, him putting food on the table comes before sport, the sport is just an added bonus. artic 595
This is a decent post. My views on this subject is this. If I was a full time pest controller where I am relying on dog and ferret, and all the other appliances that go with them to earn a crust, then yes they must earn their keep, thay have too otherwise no rabbits (game) no pay! No work, no pay. So, do we adjust so to speak to earn a crust? I know a few who did, they had no choice and it was their decision, their risk and it was VERY hard indeed to earn that crust. The way it is for me, I have a full time job, my dogs get worked on a regular basis, there is no need for me to judge my dog on merits such as "Does he earn his keep" They keep me happy, they do the job for me. I look after them and observe their working abilities and health, and only then will I make a decision to rectify any problem that arises. That's what matters to me. The price, the numbers, the yearly outcome, is not important to me at all. 3 Quote Link to post
johnny boy68 11,726
Over the years lets just say I've led a very varied and somewhat dubious lifestyle though the one constant in my life has been running dogs,if it wasn't for me having dogs in my life then I'd hate to think where I'd be now! So in answer do my dogs earn their keep?Mine do as they give me a quality of life and experience no other hobby or pastime can come near to 2 Quote Link to post
ribb 15
for me its about the hunt cannae beat walking the fields/woods first thing in the morning all quiet then bang its on dogs flying by you right on to arse of whatever it is they've spotted through the first hedge two or three quick turns back on to the hedge down the hedge back through the hedge bang game over heart racing at a 100 miles an hour brilliant Quote Link to post
Guest crobinc840
I have just started myself but I think it doesn't make a difference if they do or don't earn their keep. We enjoy our time together doing what they were designed to do. If I bring home something for the pot then it's a bonus. I'd like to think we are helping the local farms in the process.
