skycat 6,174
If the dog was castrated as an adult it shouldn't affect its prey drive too much, but if it was done before the dog had matured then it could definitely alter its outlook> early neutering before the animal has matured, will have an effect on the dog's mental maturity. Many early neutered dog pups stay very puppyish in behaviour even when they are adults. A lot does depend on the type of dog, its breeding, how its been brought up etc etc. If the dog has been correctly reared, shown/caught stuff in the field etc before it was neutered, then it may be OK, but do realise that even if that is the case both muscle tone and body weight will eventually show a difference between him and an entire male. Testosterone, one of the main male hormones, is responsible for helping the body remain in good shape. Feeding naturally, raw meat and bone and not stuffing the dog full of cereals can also help a neutered dog keep in good shape, plus plenty of regular exercise of course. 1 Quote Link to post

I run a neutered bitch and makes no difference when she is fit, although it is alot harder to keep her in shape, I am feeding her a special food with absolutly no fat but a high protien which helps but she still needs a lot more exercise. She has been laid up for a few weeks now with injury and even with the diet food she has piled on the pounds!!! Not looking forward to getting it off her ATB Quote Link to post
Millet 4,497
It makes no difference what so ever whatever age you get them done, aslong as you are not bone idle and exercise them properly you wont have any issues, and getting it done early can also prolong the dogs life as it will reduce chance of mammary tumors and other complicated problems,if the dog has the prey drive in its head and breeding you could chop its leg's of and it will still try. Casso 1,264
does it make any difference to the dogs prey drive it will make a difference at what age he's done at, those hormones or lack of them in a dog will effect how he feels about the world round him, his attraction to other dogs in a social manner will change, he will not as outgoing or feel the need to make contact with his own species and through that also contact with other species,,his drive is not in his head, its in his whole body , and his whole body needs to be there , to get the best out of him,,he will work alright, But you will always be asking yourself ,,How much better would he have been, if left as a complete male,,best of luck,, Quote Link to post
