darlo 20
i fetched him on with older dogs so he just followed them. id like to think he would have done it off his own back if he wasnt following older dogs though. i used to let him chase a rabbit skin round the garden just to get him going a bit, plus hes got a good nose on him, so when hes working hedgerows etc if theres a rabbit there he'll find it. none of my dogs retrieve but that doesnt bother me at all, im sure with the right training they could be taught to do so I have a small border bitch just over a year old. she has never been out with any other dog but she picked it up on her own, she is a great little busher, its hard to get her to stop, i would like to get her ratting with another dog but dont know any body to go with any help would be much appriciated, thanks darlo Quote Link to post

stumfelter 3,034
Borders will certainly retrieve-when I used to do a bit of pigeon shooting I had one that would bring them back alive-crows were a different matter as one latched onto his face while he was young and needless to say they didn't come to me alive! desertdog 149
thanks but im oay mate think im gonna wait a while before i get one im only 15 you see so need to save :L and what age would be the best to start working them? i get mine out as soon as they,ve had jabs, let them watch and you will see them puzzeling things out for them selves, some take time to come on and some dont, dont be discouraged by their way, they are unique, i have three and they each have their own place in the pack, and when they do come on, its pretty fierce, they will take to water like ducks, i enjoy them, but thats only my view, other terriermen have other ideas, if you dont have any patience, dont have a border, without a doubt they let you know when they want it and when they have its wholesale, long live the working border.dd Quote Link to post
p3d 879
If your 15, then best to get a pup. Bring the pup on as you learn yourself. A Border will be a good terrier to start with for running cover and ratting. You can start as soon as they have their jabs. Get out into the country. Let the pups run the ditches. It will learn at its own pace. Let it chase rabbits, it will bring out its prey drive. Learn how to socialize the pup to every type of environment. When you think it is ready let it catch a few rats. Most of all take it slowly. Best of luck. Quote Link to post
