Very interesting subject and to be honest I have mixed views. Personally I believe that if you get a pup, rear it well, socialise it and look after it there would be very little chance of it turning on you. Most of the time you find that with any of the pit bull type attacks on children etc that the owners do not understand what they have. What they are capable of.

 

I had a Plummer Terrier about 8 years ago and she was fantastic with people but she was a nightmare with other dogs. She got hold of my neighbours Jack Russell and locked on to it. I really struggled to get her off. Now thats a terrier weighing around 14lbs. Imagine a breed bred to fight, what chance would you have in getting it off? not easy.

 

I like Pit Bulls but would never keep one. Would never take the chance of something going wrong because while i am sure most people have good experiences when things do go wrong they go really wrong.

 

I think the key is the owners. People need to understand that dogs will fight. It really frustrates me when I am out in the park etc and someone who cant control their dog says "oh its fine, he wont fight with another dog" or when they treat their dogs like people. Again, usually the owners at fault.

 

I think the big fear thing is the damage they can cause. I keep whippets and they have there moments with each other. Occasionally the odd fight breaks out but its usually just a scuffle but if a fight between two bull terriers breaks out I would assume that they would be very difficult to separate.

put it this way bull terrier breeds are amongst the most stable,tenacious and highly driven dogs about.

 

they are as a rule good with people bad with dog's,if you work hard with the dog you can change this but that is their nature.

they haven't seen alot if im honest the dog has had 1 rabbit the bitch has had 2 rabbits and they've had a few ratting sessions not much serious work that i can do with them at this age just put as much time into them as i can when it comes to obedience if they pick up a few rabbits or other things on the way then thats all good how's your's coming on ll?

mine's only about 13 months, so hasnt seen much real work either.. we've had a load of sqirrels, rabbits etc and his retrieving is coming on nicely. He's killed a few small vermin and is looking lke an old hand at that, so hopefully by the end of the season he'll see some serious work.

Whats all this weight buisness, this is what i cant understand.... Adog doesnt need loads of poundage behind it to be tough dog or a killer... rotweilers are fecking hefty things, so are perinease mountain dogs but a russell would pumell one ..

lol for about a second weight size power and the ability to give and take punishment so weight and size does matter

I have a 95lb AB, closest thing to a PBT legally here in uk, he can catch rabbits, fox and squirrels and rats. Might not have the sucess rate of other breeds but he is never intenionally worked in this way but can still catch and dispatch. A pure pbt would be very similar i am sure.

 

As for APBT being dangerous to own, in the wrong hands yes, but so are motor cars, kitche knives ect. The reason they are banned is due to the polictical climate of the time and irresponsible owners buying scatterbred dogs who were never tested in any way and, as has been th case with the ab, the yanks selling shit over to here which meant the dogs were f****d in the first place. Research before making such posts Matt? For the record I am an AB judge and can assure you that this similar breed are difficult to keep together but not impossible, usually, like theapbt they are people friendly.

i also have a AB hes a awesome dog he weighs about 90lb.(hes 42kg i think my conversion from kg to lb is right)

he has a very high prey drive.

A pure standard AB would, in my opinion be closer due to the 7/8ths ruling of the american NKC and the fact that many apbt breeders in the us had ab's as well as pbt's.

 

If your talking historically yes the stafford pre 1970's would have been closer but the apbt post 1970's was bred up and more muscular (west coast style) after Carl Semencic's 1st book, where the similarity to the AB (not JDJ bred type) occurs.
