Dogs for jobs IMO Quote Link to post
Guest TERRIERCENTRAL
al start of just recently got rid of a first cross saluki/greyhound she was around the 25inch mark fast rapid bitch took most game ie rabbit hare deer PRE BAN OF COUSE . now the bad points i found with this cross shit coat no good for cold nights lamping would just shiver prowne to injurys always getting bad feet or torn of barb wire had skin like tissue paper.also had shit recall would hunt up after every slip on the lamp fine in the day. if she had a better coat good feet she would of been an ideal allrounder but she was laid up more season than i was out i would take her out a night or in the day and that was her laid up for a week or more . thaks jak Edited September 28, 2010 by TERRIERCENTRAL Quote Link to post

Simoman 110
Yes, I knew exactly what you meant Well pre ban I have dogs that would take them all BUT, specialise in one quarry. Its difficult to get a dog doing WELL on a regular basis on all IMO.......... And I don't mean 1 night out a week........ Quote Link to post

lurcher330 2,301
i have 4 lurchers 1 is a 3/4 greyhound 1/4 collie good for most jobs but have 3 wheaton greyhounds with a touch of bull in the mix that i use on all game rabbit, hare, fox and deer and they would go to ground if they could fit but if not used right can be a bit hard on small quarry and they can be very strong on the slip but with a decent lead training and being tought work off the slip will give you a good all rounder in my opinion but a good collie greyhound would be right up there with them Edited September 28, 2010 by lurcher330 Quote Link to post
poacher3161 1,766
Out of them dogs you have mentioned going on first crosses either the beddy/grey or the saluki/grey a good first cross saluki grey is more than capeable of catching a veriaty edible quarry regular imho .atb dell Quote Link to post

dodger 3,589
Here's a pic of one of my old bull/greyhounds in Australia. Bred from a first cross EBT/greyhound sire over a 1/4 bull/ 3/4 grey dam if memory serves. Used mainly for hunting pigs but could do rabbits, foxes and kangaroos (before hunting roo with dogs was outlawed). I reckon it'd do deer too but never tried it. Good tough, fast dog. chartpolski 28,222
"What makes the best allrounder ?? " I think that is an unanswerable question ! Don't forget, a "Lurcher" can be anything from a Beddy x to a Wolfhound x! And what is meant by "allrounder" ? A running dog that can take all game it's slipped on... or a dog that can drive game into a longnet at night and take hare during the day ? There isn't a dog, nor has there ever been, that can do everything. The only hope is breed the best to the best, give it the best feeding, kenneling, training and entering, and hope for the best ! Cheers. Quote Link to post
