giving a dog a trial

Recommended Posts

iv never bought a dog that has been up and running only ever had them from pups,so how do you lads go about meeting up with the seller to give the dog a trial, you want to see what your getting for your money right. do you just let the seller go about slipping the dog in their normal way of working or would you get more involved, because obviously people work their dogs in different ways and some peoples expectations are different than others.

iv heard stories of potential byers turning up mob handed which i would think could be a bit off putting for the seller, also heard of supposedly potential byers trying their luck to have the dog away so cant really blame the seller for having a couple mates tag along can you?

so if you have been out on trial as the buyer how did you organise it?and for those that have not what would you expect?

i would want a one on one with the seller if it was me,him with his dog me with the money,or visa versa, surely this is better for those involved.

just something iv thought about in case the need ever arises

If i was taking a dog on trial i would want to see it have more than a couple of slips. It all depends on your relationship with the seller. If you dont know each other then i would expect to pay for the dog but on the basis if it wasnt what i was told i would get a refund. If it's between mates then the buyer should be able to take the dog for a few nights then pay their pal once they are happy.

not ever done it but i think i would want the seller to run the dog as normal,i would like the dog to run the intended quarry for which you want the dog for.also would turn up on own or just with another lurcher man for there opinion ,think though would only have a pup or older dog if i know the back round ie been out with the dog on more than 1 occassion ,cause as you no dogs have there off nights.jmo cheers

easy enough if its mates but could be difficult getting a refund from a total stranger, i would imagine once they got your money they gone,i know there is a few good lads out there but there's plenty that would turn you over and think nothing of it unfortunately

Dont know if it still happens but in days gone by we used to demand a months trial with the dog...2 weeks minimum...nowadays most are happy to see the dog on for just a couple of hours...if they aint willin to part with the dog on a decent trial then i aint or wouldnt be intrested...atb stabba

Yeah thats true mate. I dont think i would buy a dog of a complete stranger anyway and chances are if its from a friend money wouldnt be involved.

Guess I've been lucky, purchased three adult dogs, one had to go back because of unforseeable circumstances, one was from a friend and has been the best dog I've ever seen and the third was through a friend and from a member off here and she was everything the fella said she was and more, she does exactly what it says on the tin. I have always had pups until a few years when I tried an entered dog. Its the luck of the draw, plenty of spewers are sold as untried and many dogs have faults that others can live with but a few genuine "good un's" do occasionally come up............. A months trial sounds about right to give the dog time to adjust and settle in IMO........

if there was a question on the quarry the seller could get the potential buyer to do the slipping, think that would cover their arse maybe

leave your money with the seller, take the dog on a weeks trial, if your not happy with the dog bring it back and get money back as long as the dog hasnst picked up any injurys... the seller should have no problems with this if the dog is doing the job..

imo a ready made dog for sale doing the job are like rocking horse sh##t, you do get the odd dog come along doing the biz but it will have a price tag to match, because at the end of the day who sells a good dog, imo buying ready made dogs you will see 10 bad to every 1 average, myself i couldnt buy a ready made dog runnig someone elses work, but each to there own

wouldnt want the seller there while i was trialing the dog just because it might work for him but not you...

years ago father in law was out with a dog with the owner and watched it pull out and kill 2 foxes , so bought the dog. took it home and tried and tried the dog himself and wouldnt kill a fox , swapped the dog for another because he didnt have no trial with it , and lo and behold the dog would kill foxes for this other lad lol..

imo its not just the dog on trial but your on trial for the dog .. if it dont like you it aint gonna work for you ...

and if i was selling or buying a dog a month trial would be what i wanted of would give
