Malt 379
kits do nip and bite, but like i say to all the people i meet at ferret shows, if ur scared of them they will sense it nad the more handling the better and if ur willing to keep the animal you WILL push though the pain. One of my first 2 ferrets(both rescues) but my silver mitt(2 years old) bit when i first got them 10 years ago was a little s***t get him out the cage fine, go near him when he was out he would fly at you, one day he bit me on the finger right into the bone as well, but i perservered and he was lovely ferret end so much i could put him in a babys pram and wouldnt bat an eyelid, Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear... CarraghsGem 92
ive been bitten many many times, worst bite was from a mature sandy hob used for ratting by his previous owner, who incidentally was afraid to handle him. was cleaning out his hutch about 2mths back and was moving him from his hutch to the ferret box, 1 in each hand when he managed to manouevere aroud into a position where he then sank his teeth into my thumb, canine went into the joint. i went white with pain but im way too stubborn to give him the satisfaction of me making any noise about it. put the other ferret into the box, and proceeded to try and remove the hobs grip of my thumb, tryed everything pinching his toes, nose, try to force him to let go; he wouldnt release, just started chewing my thumb. i lost my temper then and he released my thumb. put him back into the ferret box + wrapped my very chewed hand in tissue. looked like someone had stabbed my thumb about 20 times with needles, thumb was very swollen for a long while. hes a lot more amienable to being handled now, think the 2 of us have an understanding of sorts. wouldnt let anyone else handle that particular ferret though. proper22 5
it takes time when ther young but when there 6 months they should learn that when they think about turning there head there gunna get a good scruffing a flick on the nose, also a young kit just nips n bites out curiosity its only bad if you have a teasy adult that properly grabs hold to the bone (especialluy on fingers) hopwever its just the nature of the creatures you'll perservere im sure Quote Link to post
Rory4 267
think the spitting on hand works, when out in garden bend down fist closed wid spit on to try get them come to hand for a lick and pick them up! pretty sure ferrets can tell if your scared of picking them up dont hesitate just go for it and when picked them if hold fingers under front legs no way can turn there head to bite you! think the initial pick up is thing got get them used to, i try keep picking up and putting down!
