The Hunter or the Hunted??

Recommended Posts

I arrived at the family farm tonight ready for a bit of rabbit shooting, and to my surprise saw the front door of the house wide open... no-one has been living at the farm for over a year, and seeing that there were no cars on the drive this was a little strange. After 30 seconds or so of just staring at it I finally plucked up enough courage to investigate it further. Trying to be brave, I boldly (for "boldly" read "gingerly") searched the house, room by room ensuring there were no squatters or anyone trying to find a home. (It wouldn't be the first time we'd had trespassers but I'll save the story of the trespassing transvestites for another time!) Happy that the house was clear, I ventured out in to the garden, slightly more on edge than normal, and heard a loud "Crack!" from behind a hedge - way too heavy to be a rabbit. To be honest, this really set my heart pounding, and my mind was playing all kinds of silly tricks on me... once again I decided to investigate. I reached the end of the hedge, stuck my head round to see what was there and... WHAM!!... Well, I'm not entirely sure who scared who the most, but all I saw was a streak of ginger as a fox darted out of the bushes, brushed past my legs, and sprinted across the lawn! Quite an eventful start to the evening, and I hadn't even started yet!

With all these shenanigans going on it wasn't surprising that there were very few rabbits in the garden, so I moved to another field which is often a very productive spot. There's a nice wall next to the field, with a few stinging nettles growing just the other side of it which makes a perfect sniping position. I was only stood there for about 5 minutes when a rabbit appeared diagonally across the field from me. I measured him in the mil-dots and ranged him at 35yds, which would require only half a mil-dot hold over. He was facing away from me, happily grazing, so I waited until he lifted his head to have a look around before releasing my shot and knocking him straight over without a single twitch. A good end to a rather interesting evening - I don't think I'll forget my encounter with Mr Fox for a while!!

As promised, here are some pictures (thanks Phantom and Venomviper for your help!)

Glad to have been of help Nathan,

I would have to disagree with Shay's advice regarding tinypic though

I had hundreds of images with them a while ago, but the disadvantage is that ALL images are available to ALL users :icon_eek:

I was promptly accused of animal crualty :wallbash: and everything im my account was deleted, including pix of my grandaughter, my wife and many more

I complained like hell to tinypic, telling them the images are used to educate hunters and pest controllers worldwide and that all the dead animals were shot through the brain and they are all considdered pests and vermin under uk law.

They invited me to re-upload them all and they would put a note on my account telling their moderators not to delete them, but they would still be innundated with people complaining about the content, so they told me to use photobucket and make the images "private" so no one else can see them unless they look on a post with a link in

So I went to photobucket (who own tinypic) and I've not had a single complaint against me and they will not remove anything without my permission
