george atkins ga 1
i have recently been given 4 rook decoys and i tried them out over the weekend during an early morning session with my air rifle, after 20 minutes a had rooks circleing above but they were reluctant to land within 100 yards and i knew they couldnt see me so i changed tactics to using a dead rabbit which was cut open and within 40 minutes i had baged myself 1 rook and 1 jackdaw. just wondering if anyone else has had this result with the decoys or have any tips for me. davyt63 1,845
hi george well done buddy i mainly shoot bunny's but what you have been doing sounds ok to me and it works! i have done it on magpies before and got 4 of them but will say this though if you do shoot one, make sure your well hidden .because the racket of all the others around will bring a couple into your range! good luck buddy, and let us know how you get on regards davy Quote Link to post
stealthy1 3,964
Try putting your decoys out on grass, rooks prefer pasture types of habitats, they're always in flocks, they tend to eat only insects, seeds and worms, so the open carcase aproach may not work. Quote Link to post
hullhunter 219
you will be able to put your decoys anywere i allways put one of the decoys heads into the rabbit so it looks like its feeding and this works a treat. think how many times you see them at the side of roads eating road kill. just make sure that they cant see you. also if you engoy very early shooting and you have a rookery on your permition set up your decoys in the next feald before it gets light in the way i have said and ill garentee you will have a few in the bag before the sun has been up an hour. also try cutting the bottom of a can off and putting it about 2meters away from your decoys when the sun shines on it, it will catch there eye and then they will see the decoys and there dinner. also make sure the guts are all hanging out. hope this helps. let me no how you get on if you try it. atb chris Quote Link to post
Lee85 44
I've been decoying quite a bit recently and the exact same happens, I get plenty circling around and knowone coming down for the bait, I have had them down along with magpies with the dead rabbit though, I also have there calls on my mobile phone to play out and a proper caller which I rarely use as I feel daft! chameleon 26
Crows, Magpies, and Jackdaws will eat meat and road kills, but Rooks are quite catholic in how they feed, watch them through your scope and see if you can use anything they do against them Quote Link to post

jasper65 6
a good few years back I stuck a old Redtail hawk out on his bow with a dead Rabbit on the edge of some woods, he sat there quite content pulling at his Rabbit and atracted a vast amount of corvids into him who couldn't resist a bundle.. Me and a pal came away with 20 odd mainly crows, I can't remember the full amount as it was in the 90's but boy did we have some sport ...... also these calls are the Bollocks! I picked one up for myself and with some practice now have it down to a tee, if you watch this vid through to the end when he gives the proper demonstration you will hear how accurate it sounds....
