Friday evening

Recommended Posts

Tried a place last evening where the deer come down to a pasture ground from a 150 acre wood nearby .To say there was deer eveywhere is an understatement as there literally was ,at every turn .Muntjac in the farmers garden ,verboten here as the wife likes to see them but elsewhere fair game .A buck and doe crossed a gap in the hedge in front of me followed by another older buck still in velvet. In the next field i could see five does and a pricket and on the hill to my left i could see seven deer in all but never got to glass them .A plan was hatched in my head to intercept the two bucks at the end of the hedge so i stooped low and to the left until i could see the gateway they either had to come through or cross.Well things unfolded a bit quicker than i anticipated and all three were in the same field as me in seconds with the older buck chasing the young'un from left to right with the doe following on.I was in the middle of a field ,rifle on shoulder ,full camo mind but they took no notice of me at all not even the doe . When they got to the hedge things seemed to cool a bit and the younger buck wandered through the hedge to sit in the middle of the next field in full view of me while the doe seemed to accept the older fellow, tart.Another movement caught my eye and from the right came another buck ,a much better specimen fully clean and a thick antlered six.Well the decision was made to take the old buck in front of me off sticks at no more the 60 yards and a high neck shot saw him down without a movement .Watched the big lad retreat the way he came and saw that the young one was still sat in the same place undisturbed .I got down on the pod and shot him also at maybe 110 yrds in the head.Gralloched this one and dragged him to the track with the light now fading fast at 8.45 pm.Same with the other lad and drove back to pick both up .In the lights of the truck i saw another muntie and two does .No shortage here .

Pics look very dark but plenty of light left in the sky to shoot and a moon on the way up .

Well done F.D.

went to my re-brief yesterday for the new "approved witness" status with basc and they said applicants now pursueing dsc2 have to follow "best practice" guide lines and head shots will now again be frowned upon.

I am not making a comment here other then anyone now going to do their dsc2 beware you have to have a very good reason to shoot a deer anywhere other then the boiler room or neck.

regards john.
