my mates first time(!)

Recommended Posts

well maybe not their first time, but their first time out rabbiting... we met up on the farm cum industrial estate where they live and do dog security from and niall showed me his new toy-a beautiful daystate mk3 lefty thumbhole .22 that he'd bought to go from plinking to hunting with, flash b*****d, and his boy liam proceeded to pull out a b.t.a.s. fx cyclone.177 that he'd just bought. i felt a tad underdressed even with my .20 r10 but we settled down to a lengthy zeroing and target practise sesh so the boys could get the feel of their new toys.

once they were happy we set off to set up ambushes well away from each other and i managed to set off a bunch of their dogs barking fit to wake the dead as i proceeded to my chosen spot which meant that, coupled with the fisherman driving over to the lake on the other side of the field,i was to see sod all so after a while i got up to see how the lads were doing. they'd both got one each and luckily i saw a good sized doe on the other side of some abandoned farm machinery so it was time to play simon says with her til i got about 20 yds or so and settled into a kneeler made a bit tricky by a patch of weeds and a wire fence. at this point i could feel the boys eyes on me, ready to rip the pee if i missed so i settled my breathing down and took the shot.

rewarded with the unmistakable sound of .20 h+n ftt hitting head i stood up to see her wave bye bye with her back leg so i jumped over the fence and picked her up.

back to the boys, all smiles and look what we got,and i showed em how to gut and skin their kills, interestingly young liam turned out to be squeamish-we could tell by the barfing noises as i proceeded to get my hands red. naturally, being sensitive modern men, his father and i helped him get over his weak stomach by throwing small bits of offal at him and telling him in great detail what we were doing.it didnt help much, he later claimed. ah well...

anyway, some photos-

heres the boys with their dates for the night

Hi Gurtwyrz and friends.

Excellent shooting guy's, and nice pic's too.

Sound's like a very impressive collection of Rifles you all have......LOOK OUT WABBITS

By the look's of the pictures, if you should loose one down a burrow, you wont have much trouble digging it out :D

Nice one.

hi shay buddy, yeah, i'm lovin my R10 but initially i had problems with it, like a lot of the early models apparently.when i got it, it was in .177 and i couldnt do better than a 1" grouping off a bipod with it, no matter what pellets i was using, but i put that down to me cos it'd been a while since i'd shot owt, so i persevered for a while until i inherited my rapid then i discovered, after an afternoon of getting shamrocks at 30yds that it was the gun after all... i was gonna get shot of it til i got in touch with one of the tech guys on the bsa site who offered to convert it to .20 for me, deshroud it and put a rapid barrel on her for a VERY reasonable sum, so i went with that and i aint looked back since, she absolutely rocks for me now and i wouldnt swap it for the world. balance and pointability are spot on, shes very accurate now, a definite keeper, and i think its the only .20 one in the world!

i get on better with .20 as well, but finding pellets can be a bit of hassle, apparently? luckily my local shop are pretty good so im sorted.

hows the falcon going mate? looked like you were having a whale of a time with her t'other day!

all the best, wurz

hi ya wurz buddy

yeah PROPER buddy i really like the falcon like you said balance and pointability are spot on  plus very light and i thought that the bolt and then cocking it would bother me pal but it hasnt one bit its good i can load the gun and not cock it at the same time save on the hammer spring  but with the hw silencer on her makes a big difference as well i would like to get a quick fill adapter for her and a skeleton stock for her as well but as she is there is no knocking the falcon at all not to keen on the stock as it looks a little cheapish if you know what i mean buddy but other than that she is cracking matey :clapper:

nice shooting mate! keeping with the recent camo or no camo topic, were you and your mates wearing any?

they were wearing what they've got on in the photo, and i had my manky green jumper n combats on. i pulled me snooz up round my nose when i had to stalk mine, but left the rabbit romper suit in the car this time :whistling:

shay, how do you mean it looks cheap, what like the wood isnt so nice or? i do like a skele stock tho, as long as they dont make the gun too front heavy, but those falcons look made for one, their lighthunters a lovely looking piece, quite well regarded too, so yours should work great with one id've thought?

all the best, wurz

shay, yeah i got given my rapid last summer off a mate-a very good mate!-i mainly use it when lamping as its scopes illuminated so it works better after dark than the r10's little(but bloody lovely)simmons wtc. your boys a lucky little fella, my dad used to get me out in the open air whenever poss when i was a kid, some of my best kiddy memories are just him n me lighting fires and camping-i suppose youd call it bushcraft nowadays. your boy'll always remember these times with you mate :clapper:

all the best fellas, wurz
