silentshot1 206
To be honest, it's sometimes good to scare the public! The couple of ramblers I scared by popping out of a hedge the other day were quite shocked and put out until I explained the difference between Trespass (them) and invited (me). I always camo up, not army wannabe, hill billy nut job style, just an old, oversized DPM boiler suit, a Jack Pyke net balaclava and a boony hat, total cost about £30.00. The proof of success comes when you are sitting in the open grass at dusk and a fox comes and plants itself 12' away to try and do the same thing you are! That wouldn't happen in a pair of jeans You can buy better and warmer etc, but with the overall, you can layer underneath to suit the weather and temperature. Quote Link to post
Phantom 631
SS1 Where did you get the DPM overall from? I could do with an extra layer or two in the cold. I also like the idea of getting that cheeky young fox close enough to give it a slap on the chops and a bollocking for nicking my kills, thats two the little git owes me now  Phantom Quote Link to post
aaronpigeonplucker 32
call me a camo freak but i use this stuff and i can stalk within range of a woody if i keep my movements slow and it breask up your outline really wel: http://www.pbase.com/porkchop/image/44429815.jpg http://www.henrikc.dk/denmark_m84_pattern.gif Quote Link to post
gurtwurz 793
i gotta be honest, when i started up again i must've bought nearly every pattern avaiable and i've gone back to a less camo heavy approach, but i still find it hard to not buy a new pattern now! so where did you get the digicam from aaron? just out of interest... also, i've never scared anyone, even when fully camo'd up, including facemask and i've got the south downs way crossing one of my permissions. i've felt a right prat when they've seen me walking back to the car empty handed tho, although that doesnt happen much these days, thankfully. i'd come to the conclusion that all the stories about the public being scared by dpm wearing airgunners was just to help the magazines sell the real tree stuff,or has anyone, apart from silent shot and his pedestrian stalking ways , experienced this? gollum 1
In my humble opinion, camo is not as important on the body as it is on the scope.... I have spooked more bunnies by not having scrim net over the front of my scope than anything else. Even when absolutely stationary, and prone, if the bunnies catch a flash of sunlight reflecting off the scope they will be off every time. The same applies when shooting from the land rover, but put a piece of scrim net over the lens and as long as you are slow and deliberate when moving the gun in to position they seem to be unaware that your there. That is of course assuming that you are downwind, not smoking and preferably not wearing a high viz jacket and flourescent trousers Wherever possible, use the environment to camouflage yourself, ie use natural objects like hedges or trees and get close to them so that your outline blends in. Like all forms of hunting, good fieldcraft is the hardest part to learn but no question about it the most important aspect of what we do. HH all. G. Quote Link to post
aaronpigeonplucker 32
thats intresting gollum i alway wrap scrim around my rifle but ii always thought that rabbits and other quarry would be more wary of the human shape than of an object. i was reading an article in airgunner recntly and the writr said it was more important for your shape to be broken up and pink spots like your face and hands (which quarry asociate with humans) to be covered than your gun to covered up. Phantom 631
Hi Aaron, That is as you say interesting Funnily enough I was in a situation where I didn't use a net over my rifle and I moved for 20 or thirty yards in plain sight of a bunny and although it was weary it didnt bolt. The rifle was pointing down in my right hand. As soon as I (very slowly) began to raise the rifle, the black straight line of the barrel and silencer crossed my front, thumper legged it to safety It wasnt a case of it caught the flash from the light reflecting off the objective as the sun was way over to my left and behind me. aaronpigeonplucker 32
well maybe i'll start puting a little scrim over my glass then! as i've said before i alway wrap scrim round my barrel and cylinder to take the glare off. when will ggun brands start thinking "hunting" and matte-ing the barrels and cylinders instead of blueing them (and yes i know bleuing looks pretty) Quote Link to post
