SETTING A FEW NEW FENCE WIRES

Recommended Posts

WELL I WAS ITCHING TO SET A FEW MORE FENCE WIRES OUT ON SOME FENCES UP AT ONE OF MY FARMS NOW PEOPLE SAY YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR SNARES BURIED IN DUNG FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO DARKEN THEM  TOTAL CRAP THESE SNARES WERE SPUN UP TODAY NEW BRIGHT WIRE AND WERE CATCHING RABBITS WITHIN TWENTY MINUTES OF BEING SET :D A DULLER SNARE IS LESS EYE CATCHING TO PASSERS BY BUT DOES NOT AFFECT THE CATCH OF RABBITS IN THEM AS THESE PICS SHOW,

I've never seen one of those 'hoop' snares before.

Do they need pegging down at one side?

What wire do you use to make the hoops? Would a coathanger be ok or are they a bit thick?

I've only ever set shop-bought snares on fences before - I think I have a lot to learn.

I've also tended to bury my snares (not in shit, mind) and also rub earth on my hands before I start setting them (from molehills usually). My theory is, they smell less of people like that.

Is doing that a bit pointless then?

(I know that that's a lot of questions!)

Thanks for the welcome.

:signthankspin:

I've read those articles - they're very helpful.

They don't seem to make much mention of fence wires though.

I guess the 'hoop' snares are Woodga's version of the tealer snares, are they?

I haven't done any snareing since I was a student (!) and quite fancy getting back into it.

Back then I used to just set a few fence wires and every so often I'd get a rabbit for tea.

I'll have a think about the 'VD, I'm not sure how much money I want to spend, I've always seen snaring as a cheap tea.

I'm quite interested in buying some new wires once Ive moved house (in the next couple of weeks), cos the ones you lot use seem to look a lot better than my rusting shop bought ones.

hoop snares are used in light soils and sandy soils, where a peg will pull right out of the ground.

The hoop, believe it or not, will not pull out the ground. I really couldnt believe it until i tried it myself.

Like Mr. Sharpe said, buy Woodga's DVD and learn what you need to know
