Tubba, if, indeed , it is the Malinois, (Belgian Shephard), you are on about; yes, a few people have bred Lurchers from them, and at least one bloke I know, works a pure Malinois to good effect.

So, I guess it's a common name for a Malinois?

Not sure about this one, could be the spelling, as i never heard of malamar could it be you mean the Dutch/flemish word Mechelaar as the breed is named in Vlaanderen & Holland. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgian_Shepherd_Dog_(Malinois)
