if your only ever going to keep the one, Id say get a hob, but ferrets are better kept in pairs, so some will say get two jills, some people use ferrets to bolt rats, and unless your squirrels nest on the ground, I wouldent expect a ferret to go chasing them around the tree's, yes a fert can climb, but not as good as a tree rat

if you can get one from working stock, do so, if not, its get whats available

use the search facility on here, your get all the answers you need plus more

Crikey -all the way from Mexico.

I'm guessing that by squirrels you mean some sort of ground -squirrel or prairie dog?. Not something that lives in trees .

I'd also guess that the sort of ferreting you have in mind is probably more similar to how the sport is practiced in Australia than the sport in Britain . Perhaps if you cannot find any local advice an Australian member might be able to help. For instance is there a risk from poisonous snakes and what is the breeding season for conejo in Mexico?

You'd also have to be aware of any Legal restrictions .

Salud,y pesetas,y el tiempo para gastarlas .

hi doodes, thanks for your replies... actually, there is no ferreter in mexico that i know no even in the largest hunting website , www.mexicoarmado.com and the squirrel is grey squirrel but here in mexico they tend to live in the ground as moles, even my mini teckel doesen't fit there... it is very difficult to take them with shovel and terriers, because they useto make their then in road edges and bridges... but i do have terriers, the squirrels are a pest in here more than rabbit, there is no season rabbit i live in a very lon long ranch where there is rabbit haresquirrel skunk, possum, rat coyote the whole year....squirrels are tough, that's what i'm asking for actually i like more dogs to tree squirrels....

but never ferreted, and it looks exciting to me... but mexican rabbit dens look different than the `pics i've seen, but lots and lots of squirrels... lol anyway i want to get a ferret for rabbiting, but if they're able to bolt or kill a squirrel it would be amazing, but i wantto know first i don't want to kill a ferret trying

How far are you from the US?? You'll get ferrets there. Go to a store where you can get them and take some pics so we can see what they look like. But to be honest a ferret should have the instinct. For what you need one for I would suggest a large hob (1kg - 1.5kg) or two. I know you can get bigger ones over there but too big is a disadvantage in tight burrows.

Funny you mention tree rats. I read a thread on the IFF i think.

about a lad here that finds thier dreys and puts a ferret in blocks all holes and leaves the ferret

to kill the tree rat. Apparently the tree rat dont fight back and just tries to get away

giving the ferret the chance to kill. Then he would unblock the hole and ferret would come out.

Not sure i would try it with my ferrets but he apparently does.

actually squirrels fight back furiously, mi wire fox terrier has snake tongue becauseof one.. my teckel has got some injuries in mouth and shoulders in mouth i'm posting some pics so you can see it... the thing is squirrels bite hard and uses their hands i'm worried about ferret eyes... but they first try to run... tehy only fight when there is no other choice but the fight like demons... lol if i work two ferrets at the sae time they work as a team? i mean... hunting...? would they fight a squirrel together??

i live far from the usa like 28 hours by car or 1,200 dollars by plane so yes it's far but this is the kindof ferrets they sell here... look, but they sell them operated and castrated and i don want so...

the other chocie is to buy a ferret in other pet stores, like stores in small towns, or not very known pet stores where they're not so expensive and ar just deodorisez, not castrated, should they be deodorized or i should leave the stinky thing for their protection?... or buy it in a very expensive pet store that bring them from usa, russia and other countries...

do you reccomend any color more than the others...? i like albines and pure sable, cause they're white so i can't confuse them with squirrels, or even the dogs... well anyway i'm impressesd about what i've been reading about ferrets this two days

these are my dogs working squirrels, even sometimes they get into these water tubes that we use to transport water thrpugh the farm and theres no way to take the out, cause it is impossible to one person to pick them up, and you can burn dry gass in both sides of the pipe and the squirrel just won't bolt, there's ehare i want to use a ferret as well as the ground, as you see my dogs are looking for them in the ground.

That looks like fun, if you only need a ferret to flush squirrels from shallow holes and pipes for the dogs then im pretty sure one would be enough although it would be better to keep two and work them alternately.

Let us know how it goes

I use my ferret regular on squirrels,i use a jill but have used hobs...The ferret I use at the moment wasn't very good at bolting rabbits but is good on the tree rats...One drawback I've found is once they've been on the squirrels they can tend to just want to kill the rabbit rather than bolt...hope this helps...John
