Wild camping.

Recommended Posts

Got back a couple of hours ago from my first 'wild' camping trip: only one night but it was the first time.

A very nice little fallow field in the middle of an okay sized wood (probably the biggest wood in a ten mile radius of my house and I live in one of the most sparsely populated counties in England (apparently) :) ), got the tent set up, then me and my brother watched some deer, listened to the foxes, ooo'ed and arr'ed at two separate firework display some six or so kilometres away, hehe, then had a little fire with my firesteel which didn't really work due to the twigs being too wet to set ablaze well enough to start adding bigger sticks.

All in all, a very nice evening, although even from south oxfordshire London's light pollution dominated the sky. We also got up at five to watch the sunrise ... bloody clouds, eh? Then we walked the five miles home with only five hours of bad sleep.

Anyway, it was a success, and I was just wondering if anyone else wild camped, and do you take your dog? Oh, and could you point us in the direction of some smaller sleeping bags? We each carried about five or six Kgs of stuff which we were fine with, but the fricking sleeping bags were bigger than our 'four' man tent (when both were in their bags) and so were a pain to carry because they did not fit in our bags so had them over the shoulder, therefore they hung (due to the backpacks) where your arm is supposed to hang :(

I camp out as much as I can, with or without the dogs. Sometimes me and the missus, sometimes a mate and sometimes just me - I love it! Try a hammock and ditch the tent if the weather looks good, nothing beats falling asleep looking at the stars and waking with the sun!

In winter we camp on our permission so as to be on the ground early to start ferreting. Its a good feeling to get up before dawn when the tent and the ground is all crunchy with frost and then make a coffee, snuggle back into your sleeping bag and watch the sun come up!

last time i went camping the was a BIG fire lots of drink and lots of girls :D :D .and fun in my tent

but i dont think your on abought one of them camping trips

Unfortunately not ;)

Thanks guys for your comments, and yeah I've been looking at hammock camping: looks good. Oh and another type I saw was camping with a tarp and bivvy bag, any good? However the tarps seem to slightly defeat their pros by (seemingly) needing two sizeable poles to support them...

or two trees :D

Yeah, I know, but if I didn't bring the poles I must know that there'll be two trees not too far apart from one another to do so, and if I knew that I'd rather have a hammock. Besides, sleeping on tree roots is quite uncomfortable.

Hammock I found: hammock £22!

We used to do the same :clapper: dam up the river ,swim all day. Then Before we jumped in our sleeping bags we would chuck a couple of spuds raped in foil in to the glowing ashes of the fire and have them for breakfast with a pinched bottle of milk off someone’s doorstep :D atb bedrock
