Dog death whilst working

Recommended Posts

Hello Ive not been out with a dog for some time as my old girl recently died at ther age of 14, and for some time previous was to old to work, my situation is different from the vast amount of lads and lasses on here as my dog is firstly a family pet and secondly a worker, my issue/concern is that I am frightened to death at the prospect of taking the dog out and her hitting something or falling and dieing whilst out doing what she loves doing, how often do lurchers die whilst out working them ? is it possible to have A) a working dog and B) a family pet all rolled into one, cos if this ever happened while out working I wouldnt be able to go home, my wife and kids would be devastated, your advice is greatly appreciated,

Craig

ps please no nasty remarks I am merely trying to find out your thoughts

your worrying about something that might not happen you could die whilst out working the dog ever thought of that? u could go down like a buffalo heart attack on the spot or a brain hemorage id be more worry about the fact your going to a known puppy peddler who hasnt worked his dogs in 20 yrs and your lineing his pocket instead of look for a genuine lurcherman to supply you with a pup off working parents

Dont get me wrong, Lora my last dog was as fit as a fiddle and worked 2 - 3 times a week and went out for a good run twice a day, this dog will be fit to run, just after loosing the last dog shattered me, very emotionally attached, and your right I think Im probably worrying about somatt that wont happen.....but does it happen often ?

i have had 10 dogs in 30 years, and only 2 have died in old age. :(

two im still working, but all the others have gone befor there time.

dont want to scare you but working dogs are far more likly to die early. but given the chance all dogs would sooner work than sit on a sofa all its life.

one thing you could do is just get a pet for the family, and have a dog for ya self

I nave Tomo but knowing what Im like I'll end up with two pets, know that most of you hardened dog men will call me a sissy, soft lad etc but I couldnt treat the two dogs differently, I suppose Ill just take me chances and like I always have not take any chances, do you think that given the choice the dog would want to work than lie there stretched out on the sofa ?

thats a good idea!

working dogs are more prone to injury because of their chasing instinct and accidens happen, dogs which are worked before their fully grown or over worked and not rested or stretched properly are certainly more likely to get badly injured, having said that i strongly think its fairer for any dog to work as thats what their bred to do, rather then how some pets are over fed, under exercised and just plain bored!!

all my dogs are combination of companion for me and my daughter and workers, to be honest any good lurcher owner would find it upsetting for their dog to die whilst out, but then theres the veiw of at least he went while happy,

with regards about getting your next lurcher i agree with what was written earlier go find a breeder of working lurchers, all dogs crave effection but you'd have the advantage knowing where your pup came from and that if it's got good blood in it means its more likely to work well

best of luck with the new one lurcher lass x

If a man or woman can honestly say they've never been done in either when they lost a dog or even had one fail on them then they ain't dogmen,a craftsman looks after and cares for his tools of his trade mate, cowboys don't!!!!.

Hi, Lass im totally with you, the reason we went to Hancock is Lisa my wife wanted a certain dog, collie x which would be fawn colour and broken coated, I did get the number for 2 other very respected breeders, only to be told that they were inbetween or geographically such a long way from me in Nottingham, bare in mind my last bitch which as stated I had for 14 Yrs was from the dog pound, and with love and care, she pulled out all the stops for me....saying that Im sure to some of you experienced lurcher people, she'd probably not even make your kennels but to me...the togetherness of me and her out on our own hunting together made the bond even stronger, and Im sure I let her down on occasion like she failed to connect with rabbis from time to time, im not keeping scores or have a remitt off a farmer to reduce numbers it's just for sport (is it pc to say that...sorry if not) so to get to my point, Hancock sell the type of dogs that I want, and is only an hour away from me........there would have been nothing I would have like better than to by from a lad off here

Mine are pets who are appreciated for what they are and encouraged to do what comes naturally. Maybe some day they'll get more 'work' but at the moment they get what I can give them. I've already lost one that was just out for a mooch .... felt like my heart was ripped out. If you keep them, care for them, train them etc you're going to be devo'd weather it's a pet or a straight worker. When I go out with mine now, being more aware of the risks etc., I know that accidents can happen but would still much rather let them chase than not. Would rather my dog died in full flight and loving life, which is what mine was up to when the train hit him. Much as I wish I could go back in time and change it, at least he died full of joy.

There's no reason imo that you can't have a working pet. These dogs are more prone to accidents, but they live a fuller life than many.
