Fidgety 8
I got the Jack Pyke multi gun cleaning kit - Not impressed - lots of different calibers, but oddly NOT .243 ??? Why not?? Also, all the brushes and mops are not compatible with those availiable in UK gunshops, so if you break one or wear it out, you will have to go and buy new rod and all brushes for that calibre!! Thin rod broke on mine to - weak brass. Mailed Jack Pyke, never came back to me. Avoid that one and buy seperates is my advice. Quote Link to post

Yup that is right - cleaning the rifle properly using good gear will add to the barrel's life. Dewey rods, Pro shot jags and brushes and their patches (the Tetra patches are poor quality IMO) These items cost a little more but will outlast your rifle. I expect the bore snake boys will be along shortly Quote Link to post
Fidgety 8
"I expect the bore snake boys will be along shortly" I understood the bore snake to be an emergency field cleaner. Quote Link to post

I suggest buying rods, brushes etc for EACH calibre you require, may well cost more but a better long term investment!! Quote Link to post
weejohn 3
and the other most important piece of equipment along with the cleaning rods is most definately a bore guide Deker is right in saying you should buy the seperate rods / jags and brushes for each calibre. Quote Link to post

Deker 3,491
I have a mixture of Mr Dewey and Parker Hale rods and there is no question Dewey are better ...but you pay for it. Just bought a new .22 rod at the Phoenix and paid £14.50 for a Parker Hale, had the Dewey in my hand as well but they wanted £23. Parker Hale it was as I had just spent over £100 on cleaning stuff alone...but I did need to stock up on virtually ALL my cleaning fluids and brushes etc!! Quote Link to post

lgray88 4
where can i purchase all the stuff online though, get it down quickly rather than doing it over the phone and faffing around with that liam Quote Link to post
cyclonebri1 8
I tried to remain conventional with the cleaning gear but the .17hmr is a bugger to rod out. I bust 2 cleaning rods, (1 a parker hale 1 piece), in two sessions. The force required to shove the brush up the barrel wastoo much. Anyway gave up and bought a bore snake, much easier, quicker and less chance of knocking the scope whilst wrestling with 3ft of rod Boresnake for this and didicated rods for other calibres would be my say Quote Link to post

Perhaps a bore guide would have helped you. But then again I think my view of bore snakes for full cleaning is well known!! Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
You cannot get a jacketed calibre properly clean with a boresnake, you need too many different things down the bore - that's why patches are good, different solvents are easy to use! Quote Link to post
