  7. The lurcher is a type of dog originating in Ireland and parts of Great Britain. While not a pure breed, it is generally a cross between a sighthound and any other breed, depending on the qualities desired by the breeder. Collie crosses are popular, given the working instinct of a sheepdog when mated with a sighthound, gives a dog of great intelligence plus speed good results for the huntsman. Lurchers, given their breeding to purpose, can be as small as a Whippet or as large as a deerhound, but most are of a size similar to that of the greyhound. The coat type will again be variabl
  8. The Whippet, an English Greyhound in miniature, is the fastest domesticated animal of his weight, capable of speeds up to 35m.p.h. There are several different theories about the Whippet’s ancestry. Some historians believe that the Whippet resulted from breeding runt Greyhounds repeatedly down in size, while others think that Whippets came from crossing Greyhounds with smaller Spaniels. Another theory is that the Whippet descends from crosses between Italian Greyhounds and various terrier breeds, particularly the Manchester Terrier. The Whippet arrived in England in the 19th century and ori

  12. Mourne Race Day Saturday 3rd November 12 Saturday 3rd of November 2012 was Mourne Race Day, in aid of MacMillan Cancer Care. I jumped out of bed bleary eyed, opened the blinds, and to my horror, it was pitch black outside. My mind was still fixated in the zone of beautiful summer mornings, when I would awaken to the sound of the dawn chorus outside my window and the daylight and sun beaming in through the pane. Yes, it was time to load up the dogs in the trailer, and set out on our journey to the beautiful Mourne countryside, and the Mourne Race Day. We stopped off at “Gilberry Fayr

  16. Thought a new positive thread for this day might be useful. I'm sorry I can't be there as I have a previous commitment at the NARGC's St Hubert Day's Celebrations in Abbeyleix but we have supported the day by putting up some prizes. It is an important day because firstly Tango, his family and team work very hard to put on good events; secondly it is for a very good cause and one that is very close to our family's hearts and thirdly I understand it is a trial run for some the new rules proposed for lurcher racing in Ireland. I wish Tango well for a successful day and hope Margaret &

  21. Ideally situated in the shadows of the famous green Glens of Antrim, and deep in the heart of the Irish Countryside, lies the townland of Dunsilly, Co Antrim. This was the perfect setting for the last “ Sporting Whippet Club NI “ show of the year Sunday past 16th September. The venue for the show as usual, was at Dunsilly Kennels and what a day that was. As Dunsilly kennels is situated of the M2/M22 at junction 1, this is a superb venue and easily accessible to the motorway.
