  1. if you are in the services, you can use your Standard Learning Credits to offset the cost of DSC 1. dont know of any civilian grants tho. Ug
  2. nice bag FH. i see that youve paunched the hares tho? all the books i have read say that hare should be hung with the innards still in. is there any particular reasonw hy you paunch them? cheers Ug
  3. hello, i have recently passed my DCS1 (with jon snowdon at Greelee. An excellent course with a great teacher, i reccommend it to anyone). having been granted my FAC i am now in the market for a rifle. i have gone with .243 on my FAC, as it would do fox and deer (and the FEO suggested it). does anyone have advice for a first rifle. i would like a synthetic stock, detachable magazine and moderator (this is on my FAC also). i have been looking at the savage model 16. if anyone has experiences of them i would be very interested in hearing them. thank you in advance Ug
  4. yeah, i read that on the website. what a load of bollox. i left a few comments in response to the morons that were up in arms about it. i think it is important that we respond to all statements made against or about fieldsports. Ug
  5. I done my level one with John he is a great bloke, stayed the weekend in one of his cottages and his wife is a great cook to. John will take you through it step by step just listen you will be ok. Let us know how you get on. Thanks for the advice. i found john to be an informative and friendly man. he is an excellent tutor and i passed. The BASC were speedy getting me my documents, i had it through the post 2weeks later. just in time for the FEO to visit thankfully. the next stop is now the gun shop for a suitable deer rifle. i have been approved for .243. Does any one have any re
  6. in england and wales a .22 rifle with minimum muzzle energy of 1000Ft/lbs and minimum bullet weight of 50grains is legal for muntjac and CWD. cheers UG
  7. Cool!, THanks for all the really helpful replies guys. Ill be investing in a CZ 452 with moderator then. I already have applied for the mod on my FAC. Im not interested in the set trigger. I have a lot of centre fire rifle experience with the military, so would prefer a two stage trigger to mimic a military rifle as close as possible, as that is what I am confortable with. Thanks again. Ug
  8. I have recently had a visit from my FEO in relation to my first FAC. He has told me that there shouldn't be any problems, and God willing I will receive my FAC within a few weeks. I have been doing rabbit control in my local area with an air rifle and a shotgun. I would like to get a .22lr to improve my bag sizes. Does any one have any reccommendations as to which particular rifle would be best? I would prefer a bolt action as it would be more reliable and avoid 'spray and pray', with detachable box magazine ideally. I have a budget of £400. Thanks in advance, Ug
  9. I agree with badger. Except you dont need to use RealTree, any modern camo will do. I just wear a pair of drab green trousers and a combat jacket (as it has loads of pockets). I've never had a problem hiding from quarry. Modern camouflage equipment is designed with the intent of hiding the individual from animals with a lot better detection systems than deer, mainly other humans. When its brand new camouflage clothing is IR absorbent and waterproof. Its also designed to hide the user in a temperate enviroment, in wester Europe. Remarkabley similar to the climate that most in the UK hunt
  10. im booked on the level 1 course at greenlee in northumberland at the end of this month. im reading the course manual, but am a complete beginner with deer. does any one have any advice? cheers UG
  11. yeah, i just hope somebody takes me up on it!
  12. nevermind mate, hopefully someone will volunteer; UG
  13. I have some permission to control rabbits in the area around Colchester. I have been shooting and snaring, but with the cover now dying off i thought that some ferreting would be good to try. Unfortunately circumstances dont allow me to have a ferret. If anyone with ferrets and nets wouldd like to organise a days ferreting on the ground over a weekend just let me know. I have a car and am more than willing to give lifts for a bit of petrol money. This is posted in the share a hunt section, but I havent had any interest, so thought I would go straight to the horses mouth as it were.
  14. you can just drive them over on a ferry mate. i used to move mine via the belfast - stranraer ferry. if you dont want to drive yourself some courier companies will take dog boxes (try DHL or TNT). or find someone who is going to make the trip and bung them a few quid. UG
  15. Ive called the number but got no answer, so i text, but got no response. Any idea whats going on? cheers UG
  16. looks like nobody is interested in this one mate, maybe you should have put it in the shooting section.
  17. No dramas DnN. good to get out with the dogs. look forward to some more drives later on, and trying the terriers. Mine should be out of season by the end of the month. cheers UG
  18. ive got a 3" magnum that i bought last month. had a couple hundred shells threw it so far, with no problems. even cycles 28g trap loads efficently and reliably. from the reviews i have read on the internet the 3 1/2" were the guns with the problmes and there are no dramas with the new 3" cheers Ug
  19. Thats cracking, thanks for all the replies guys. i will post some piccys when im done. think i may need to find a new head tho, this one was badly fractured from the RTA that killed it. ill have a practice on it re the teeth and all. thanks for the advice. Ug
  20. i brought the head to the boil, and then simmered it for approx 20hrs. the flesh just fell away from the bone really easily. Like i said the smell wasnt too bad, a bit like chicken stock. unfortunately i think i boiled it for too long, as when i was removing the flesh, the teeth fell out as well. what is the normal time frame (if there is one) for boiling deer head? or do i just need more practice? lol
  21. the missus s away visiting her family for a week, so its just me and dog (well its dogs, but she only knows about the 1. im sure she will be more worried about the dog than the fox head). its smells a bit like when you boil a chicken carcass for stock. shes not back till thursday, so ive got half a week to clear the house of the smell. anyway, women enjoy cleaning ! lol.
  22. how long do i need to boil a deer head for? ive got a fox head (from a road casualty) and thought that i would have a go at stripping and bleaching it. i assume that the process for deer and fox will be the same (apart from the antlers obviously). Thanks in advance for any hints or tips. Ug
  23. cheers mate, but ive already given him a call. has some in stock at the mo, and only takes a few at a time. the golf course where i have permission is over run at the moment. went for a walk last night with the shotgun at dusk, no light, and shot 14. green keeper wants as many gone as possible, so need some where that will take a few, as will be snaring as well as shooting. Ug
  24. i have permission to control rabbits in colchester. does any one know of any game dealers near colchester that would be willing to buy my surplus rabbits? alternatively, a butcher or similar. the butchers i have spoken to either dont do rabbit, or have some in already. all suggestions welcome. thanks Ug
  25. stubby, yours looks like a great diving beetle. if you look at the carapace, is there a tube running around the bottom edge? it has a join just under the back end of the wing case. when they are in water they hang with their arses at the surface and their heads down, breathing through the tubes.
